HI there

I submitted a couple of pictures to a baby and childrens modelling company called Babyshak

Now im going to copy and paste part of the email...........

Thank you for your interest in Babyshak. We are delighted to confirm that following our assessment, which includes your location, your child's criteria and our client requirements, we have a place available and would like to offer Lola that position. Babyshak is selective with those we accept and the very fact that your child has been accepted means that we are confident there will be the likelihood of work. As with any reputable agency, work cannot be guaranteed for any child as the decision is with the client and not the Agency as to who they select. Please note that we are an extremely busy agency with client work....................

Proceeding with this acceptance is subject to the following: 1) Complete and return the Baby Admin Sheet (scroll down below this letter), together with photo's for our files (snapshots are fine - please see note A below for full details).2) ??90 set up cost, made payable to 'The Shak Companies'. This is a one-off payment and NOT a yearly fee, which we pay to the web company we use for the cost of setting up your child and administration charges until your childreaches their 4th birthday. There are no further fees applicable, only the ??90 set up cost.

Now im not sure if all agencies ask to pay a fee/charge to be put on the books or if the people out to scam you do.

Any ideas, help, info would really help

I think most do ask for a fee though I have no experience of this. Hopefully someone will have used this agency before & you'll find out how reputable they are before you part with any money

Hope they are & Lola does well. Shes a wee cutie so she should do well

We live over in N.Ireland so most things would probably involve travelling over to England. I would have loved to with Amy, my oldest, shes now 2 & loves posing & getting her photograph taken. I might look into seeing if there are many agencies over here & make a few enquiries. I would love to know how you get on with Lola

I was saw it on watchdog or something that if a model agency asks for a fee it may be dodgy. No experience myself so ant comment from personal experience. Why dont you try a few other agencies and see what the norm is? I found this for you if it helps.

there is a organisation set up to help these cases, they list agencies that they garentee are genuine. iv seen them on tv and there was something on her about them too. i used them to find an agency and they wanted ??170. i gave up and didnt try any others but if you can find the web site you could check if you agency are listed as genuine.
24/01/2008 at 15:19
No, don't pay any fees! I used to model and MKT86 is right, you shouldn't have to pay a angency, they take their money out of the money you earn.

Good luck. x
24/01/2008 at 15:34
Hi
MKT86 is right, it was on TV about it and the reputable ones don't ask for money up front. Good luck anyway!

Lisa Marie that is what im thinking - surely if they think Lola could get work then they wouldnt need to make me pay for Lola to go onto their books? x

Does anyone know anyone who has been in the same situation and found any repitable (sp?) ones then please let us know x
24/01/2008 at 16:06
I would say scam but I am not very trusting of people.
If they send that letter out to everyone who registers interest and they go with it then they have a very nice little earner without having to do anything else, after all they are not guaranteeing (sp) you any work are they.
The letter is worded in such a way to say that you are the only one chosen so most people would probably pay the fee but IMO they shouldn't ask for a fee, I agree that their cut is usually taken from any work that the lo gets.
I would look into it before sending any money, there was something on this site about model agencies a while ago so that may be helpful.

I have just been onto the website

www.babyshak.com

and it seems decent enough, it shows you how much they charge clients for things and it shows who uses them.

if you have time id love it if you could have a quick look and see what you think please xxxx

My MIL registered my SIL with an agency when she was a younger. They made her pay for a portfolio (which did not look very professional), then they made her pay for a model training day etc etc They made promises of work and nothing ever came of it. My SIL was a teenager at the time thats why i cant comment specifically on baby modelling agencies. I would just do a lot of googling before commiting to anything.
24/01/2008 at 16:56
OMG!!! yeah im just on google now - as well as ebay and facebook!!! lol xxx
24/01/2008 at 17:22

Have just had a quick look on the website and it does look pretty genuine but then again I suppose that doesn't mean anything. The list of clients looks impressive and I'm sure they wouldn't get away with listing them if they weren't clients??
Not sure about them asking for dosh though, like the others say, the alarm bells do ring when they want money upfront.
Do the t&c's shed any light on any loopholes?

Babyshak Agency73a Mayplace Road WestBexleyheathKentDA7 4JL

Dear Miss L Moule
Thank you for your interest in Babyshak. We are delighted to confirm that following our assessment, which includes your location, your child's criteria and our client requirements, we have a place available and would like to offer Lola that position.
Babyshak is selective with those we accept and the very fact that your child has been accepted means that we are confident there will be the likelihood of work. As with any reputable agency, work cannot be guaranteed for any child as the decision is with the client and not the Agency as to who they select. Please note that we are an extremely busy agency with client work.
Babyshak is a DTI regulated and EM Accredited & Approved Agency. We choose not to assess a child before acceptance for the following reasons: 1) it is against government regulations, 2) children of this age change so rapidly, so there would be no point 3) clients select from photographs, so do we.
Proceeding with this acceptance is subject to the following: 1) Complete and return the Baby Admin Sheet (scroll down below this letter), together with photo's for our files (snapshots are fine - please see note A below for full details)
.2) ??90 set up cost, made payable to 'The Shak Companies'. This is a one-off payment and NOT a yearly fee, which we pay to the web company we use for the cost of setting up your child and administration charges until your childreaches their 4th birthday. There are no further fees applicable, only the ??90 set up cost.
Note A: Please avoid the following photographs - nudity, food around the mouth, busy background, dirty nose, blurred shots, hats, dummy in mouth, miserable/unhappy, red eye, poor quality, squinting/grimacing. We need to promote your child as best we can, so send us shots that we can submit to our clients!
Returning your details to us, is in acceptance of our Terms, which you should read in full (attached). Set up costs are not refundable once thework has been completed. Babyshak will keep your place open for 28 days from your receiving this letter, however, if you do not wish to proceed, please email application@babyshak.com in order that we can open the position up to another applicant. You can either post the details and payment to us, or email the photos and Admin Sheet (on one email please) to parent@babyshak.com and make payment over the phone(0208 301 6153) , or online (go to www.babyshak.com/payments and follow instructions). If you select to email them to us please put your child's full name in the subject bar and do not send until you have made payment first as your authorisation number should be inserted onto the Admin Sheet. If you wish to pay via your own paypal account the email address you needs is parent@babyshak.com and the amount is again ??90
Once we receive everything from you, we will instruct our IT Company to begin their work and print your child's model cards (which are immediately sent out to clients). This will take approx 3-4 days. We will then email you confirmation that your webpage has been completed, together with a copy of your child's online portfolio/model card to view. This email will also include your licence documentation request, which is extremely important for us to submit your child for work, as it is a legal requirement. Therefore, if you do not receive this within 7 days of making your payment, please email parent@babyshak.com as a matter of urgency and we will ensure you are sent further copy.
Once again, on behalf of Babyshak, I would like to thank you for your application and welcome you to the Agency. If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us by phone (10-5pm), or by email at any time. Kind regards JAMES DAWKINS APPLICATIONS DEPT

Hi Lauren

Just had a quick read through and all seems ok I guess? The only bit that I thought you may want to ask about is:

13) The Parent understands that there will be a fee payable for anyreinstatement of the child's profile to the website and optionalphotographic work. NOTICE .

Does this mean when they need updated pics? How often would this be as you know how quickly our lo's change?

I'm a bit divided on this one as if they are paying an outside company to update their website then I suppose it could justify the one off fee maybe? Oooh it's a tough one isn't it? I must admit it would be tempting to go for it but it comes back to the old thing about paying money upfront!!

What did you have to send in? I could put Kade forward and if he comes back accepted too then it could be a bit sus? What do you reckon?

Alarm bells are going off all over the place with me but as i said i am not very trusting.
Your ??90 is non refundable and they take 20% from every job, you have to provide photos of a suitable quality which means they could ask for professional ones that you have to pay for.
Also they can terminate the agreement - it does not say there has to be a good reason and obviously you do not get your money back.
Sorry all sounds a bit dodgy, it would be good if you could find someone who was actually with them.
I looked on a few chat sites and could not find anyone signed up but alot of people accepted and alot of people who said to avoid if asking for a fee.
Hope you manage to find out some more info that will help you decide.
