Hi me again. Can anyone help me my mum and dad bought a car seat from the car boot yesterday. Is this ok? My oh doesn't like the idea and i'm one of these people that doesn't like to offend anyone so i don't know what to say to my parents. I've seen the car seat and it looks in really good condition. If it wasn't for my oh i would hesitate using it. HELP. Michelle xxxx

Hi Michelle, I know how you feel not wanting to offend but really car seats are so important that you can't afford to gamble. Most will be fine but to be honest I wouldn't use it. Perhaps you can say you already have 1 and suggest she keeps it at her house for emergencies or say you are using it and don't. Depends if she'll know!

For big things like a car seat, I would always go for new, it may look in good condition, but you never can tell.

I think I would have 2 agree with your oh, even though it looks gd on the outside you dont knw if it has been in an accident & is damaged on the inside. You also have 2 make sure it fits your car correctly x

hi i agree with you oh, i personally wouldnt use a second hand car seat because you never know if it has been in an accident or if it meets current safety regulations. We had a car accident when my oldest daughter was 2 and although the car seat looked fine (there wasnt a mark on it) we were advised that the impact would have weakened the shell and the webbing on the straps would be severely weaker.

I also agree with your oh, I'm sure if you showed your mum and dad the reasons as to why they don't recommend using second hand car seats, I'm sure they will be understanding and not want to put your LOs saftey at risk.

I agree with the others Michelle. Its not worth compromising the safety of your lo and I'm sure your parents will understand if you explain the reasons to them. x

I would never use a 2nd hand car seat unless it's from someone you know & you know it's history. 2nd hand car seats will look look ok and you may have it fitted properly but if you ever crash it's then that's when you'll find out whether it's safe or not.... & tbh I would never want to take that chance.

car seats brand new aren't too expensive when you think how long they'll last for... xx

I have been given a second hand car seat by my brother which I've given to MIL as she was gonna buy one off carboot and I advised her not too, also my mum has one which again was my brothers so she'll use that in her car and I bought a brand new travel system so our seat will not have been used. It's recommened not to use second hand car seats or second hand matteress in the cots.
