Hi,
Just wondered if anyone has heard of this. My SIL has a daughter who she claims started crawling at this age, I have several children and none of them started anywhere near this age and have never heard of it before. My son is a few weeks younger than my niece (he is 4 and a half months now) and showing no signs. I am not worried as like i said i have several kids already so i know that each child is different and am completely cool with it. Just thought i would raise this on here as might be able to get a better idea of whether it is true or not. My SIL is very competitive (and we don't get on so well) so not sure if we have entered into some sort of child race or not (i certainly don't want to).
Anyone else had this?

A friend of ours claimed her son climbed out of his pram and started crawling at 4 months but she is one of those uber competetive mums whose child has to be the first at everything so I don't particularly believe her!! My youngest is just 5 months and hasn't even rolled yet, DS didn't until he was 6 month so I'm not bothered! As long as they're happy and healthy that's all that matters!

Sorry I cant say I believe that! Someone I know claims her son started crawling at 5 months which is more believable but even with her i take everything she says with a pinch of salt!

don't believe it for a second!! Rolling over at 3 months maybe but certainly not crawling!!

exaggeration me thinks! lol

People who go on & on about how their lo's did this or that really early just bug me! Motherhood is def. not a competition and they do things in their own sweet time. I'm so excited about weaning my lo for example but I know he's not ready and I will wait until he is (suspect will be between 4 and 5 months)...whereas I know ppl who weaned at 3 months because THEY wanted to and not cos lo is ready...

My little one is only 12 weeks and I know a little one of 15 weeks or so who shuffles on his belly in a circle and pretty much sits up without support(I've seen him do this lol so I know the mum isn't lying.)

I don't believe that at all - one of my friends daughter started crawling at 6 months and we all thought that was super early!
The baby probably accidently moved around a little while on their tummy, making it crawling in her mind.

Matthew is 6 months and has just started rolling over!!

Joshua didn't crawl until he was 11 months!

I dont believe its possible. they arent even very strong at holding their heads then!!

I can beat that! Not only is my friends daughter rolling over at 5 weeks, but now she's crawling too! She failed to perform in front of us on the rolling over so I've put it down to my friend getting cabin fever being stuck in the house till she gets the all clear to drive after a section!!

I think morighan has it right about the baby (and my friends no doubt) moving about a bit and making them think its crawling!

pmsl! some of these are hilarious! i too have an uber competative "friend", she asked me if harri was talking at 6 months and when i said no she said "agggggh well he will, they are all different!"
this really got my back up as she said it like he was behind or something! grrrrrr.
My mum has this saying "babies cant do it all at once"
Which is true some childeren do some things early but then will be later in doing something else. Harri crawled at 6 months but has no teeth at all and no signs of them poppong threw, and has only just started to sit unaided.

We all know "one of those" women don't we!!! I have a friend who doesn't even have kids but is competitive using her cousins kids as bench marks!!!!
Her cousin has 2 girls, both apparently rolled over at 3 months, were crawling at 5 months, walking at 9 months and potty trained by a year!!!
What a load of old bulls**t!!!!
She's always going on about one of our friends lo's, because he didn't crawl/speak/walk until just after his first birthday, but then everything happened all at once, he crawled, 2 weeks later took his first steps and then started saying mama and dada, she is constantly saying she thinks he has developmental issues and problems and is really slow and behind!!! How bloody rude!!! Babies do their own thing in their own time!

Gosh this reminds me of myself with my first. I had a friend who swore there was something wrong with my daughter for not crawling at about 10 weeks old. I being a sleep deprived, over worried first time mum, went out and bought one of those splash pat mats with the water inside. I tried desperately to encourage her to play with it hoping she'd then build up strength to crawl. I have all these pics that I look back and laugh at. My poor lo just lying all tiny and limp on this mat. She was so small and so very not ready.I tried for a few days and gave up figuring well she'll do before she leaves home and then cried. I look back and laugh but it's awful that people make you feel that way. The one thing all mums have in common is we want so much to do well by our children. All babes do things in a different order, who'd want them to all be the same? That's the fun is getting to know the incredible new person.

they are always the ones that moan theyre baby has grown up so fast but they wish theyre tiny days away, imagine how pressured the los are gonna be as they grow up if its like it as a baby

Lol, these are funny. I too know someone like this, but she uses her sisters child instead. She's always been like it with everything, so I shouldn't really be surprised. She insists that her sisters 4 month old can say "Laura". Mmmm, i'm sure she can! xxx

I no lo's who have moved about on there bellies at 3-4 but its not a conscience(sp?) thing, its just because they are thrashing around and kicking there legs and arms about. I personally would say that the mother is telling a small tale and I wouldn't believe it untill I saw it myself.

Phew!!!
Thank goodness!!! Thanks for all your replies, i thought i was a going a little bit potty for a while there. It's daft cos i've got a few children and know what i'm doing but it still gets to me.
My SIL once commented to my parents (when i wasn't there) about why i had some grey hairs. She then said that it's probably what happens when you have kids. Now she's had hers i'm going to be looking closely for her greys! (tho she meticulously dyes hers).
I think all babies start to shuffle a bit at that age but i would not call it crawling. It is not always a blessing to have an early crawler anyway as anyone with older kids knows.
It is often the case where they concentrate on one skill at a time as mentioned previously. My son hates it on his tummy as he likes to see everything going on and be involved. This has resulted in large shrieks and babbling so we don't forget him. Now he's learnt that, i'm sure he'll be moving in his own time.
I just don't want to get into comparing my son and my niece because they are so close in age. She even thought i got pregnant on purpose at the same time even tho our due dates were several days apart! We had been trying again after a miscarriage a few months before but obviously i was trying to steal their thunder!
Sorry, rant over with!! You can see how she gets to me.....

yep i know one of those mums too, i think every playgroup has to have one by law!!! lol
i have to admit my daughter was early at doing some of those things (she performed in front of others too in fact the 1st time she crawled it was at playgroup) but she's also been late doing others like talking. she only had 10 words by the time she turned 2! she's 2 and a half now and is starting to catch up with words. like all kids they develop at different rates.
i hate to admit it but i'm enjoying my son as a baby more than i did my daughter because he is being a baby! Robyn didn't really like been cuddled she always seemed to want to do everything herself she could sit unaided by 14 weeks, started bum shuffling at 5 months, crawled at 6 and got up and walked with furniture at 7 months and from 8 months was walking on her own. not only was it expensive because i had to buy shoes but i felt like i'd missed out on her being a baby and that she didn't need me. of course i know she does and i'm enjoying her now as a toddler.
they are all so different.

i have had kids that have done things early and tbh i hate it i feel like i have been robbed of having a baby  but crawling at 3.5 months lmao that is funny maybe she rolled by fluke lol
05/08/2008 at 12:27
 that is so funny, crawling at 3 1/2 months!!!! I have 4 children and my first 2 were about average with everything, my 3rd was a nightmare as she did everything early although according to your sil she was obviously a late crawler at 5 1/2 months ha ha. Isaac is just plain lazy and didnt even crawl till jsut before his first birthday. stll laughing at the thought of a 3 month old baby trying to crawl.

Haha, how daft calling it crawling at 3 months! Evie sleeps on her tummy and always shuffles up the cot in the night- she's done this since she was a couple of weeks old...so maybe I could say she crawled at 2 weeks haha!!

Lily could sit up on her own at about 5 months and crawled at 6 months which I think was quite early but I wouldn't brag about it as all babies do things in their own time. In fact I haven't told the mums at baby massage that Evie's been sleeping through for quite a while now because none of their babies sleep and I don't want to seem like I'm bragging!

Sunnymum, can't believe someone asked you if Harri was talking at 6 months! She obviously knows nothing about babies.

lol - this makes me laugh as there used to be a girl on here, i wont mention her name just in case she comes back lol

her child was walking at 6 month and talking at 6 month also - and doing things that my son still cant do, i was getting a bit paranoid reading her stories coz her child was a bloody magician, and my son was busy lying on his back not moving just gurggling lol - i was telling my mum the mil and everyone that i met and all they did was laugh!

But i wonder why do people feel the need to exagerate everything, the way i see it my child is wonderful in everything he does, i have never pushed him and he crawled at 51/2 month got his first tooth at 6 month and walked at 1 year exactly and he is now 14 month and he can say the alphabet and he can do long division lmao
