Hi, I was wondering if you could help me. My little man started commando crawling at the weekend and when I was bathing him tonight I noticed he had red patches and really dry skin on his knees. Does anyone have any top tips of creams or moisturisers I can put on them to stop it getting worse? Thanks!

hi my dd1 commando crawled and never got onto her knees to crawl. we use to just use a baby mositerier from asda on her skin after her bath and then in the morning. Lizzie gets red knees if she crawls on carpet so she has to stay in leggings at home! x

one of the best things we found to use as a moistureiser was olive oil - its completely natural so baby shouldnt react to it, and it works really well at clearing up dry patches.

Other than that you could try aqueous cream.

i know you can get trousers etc from some shops that have slightly padded knees... something like that might help!
my sister in law sewed tiny buts of fabric padding in to my nephews trousers when he started crawling crazy style and it helped them!

Ha ha! Can I tie the hoover to his ankles so he drags it behind him lol.
Actually I remember the HV recommending olive oil when his skin was dry when he was born, will try that again. If all else fails at least it will slow him down when he is wearing shorts with all the sliding haha!

we use doublebase cream which is fab. You can get it on prescription. If you are feeling flush, dream cream from lush is soooo lovely! xxx

I have never heard of doublebase cream, whats that? I am wary of using stuff like lush on him because my skin reacts to all stuff like that. I have the strangest skin. I use wilko's own brand shower gel and thats fine but dove, body shop, lush, simple, elemis etc all make my skin flare up!!

it's an emollient cream but feels like a gel. Emily was prescribed it for her excema when she was younger. I found it better than diprobase which E was also prescribed. If you are back at the docs with your ds' sickness i would mention his dry knees and they might prescribe you a moisturiser! x

We used aqueous cream. If he is commando crawling though, I would recommend NOT putting him in cardigans (or anything with buttons on the front) if you can help it. I spent most of last winter sewing buttons back on that Peter had rubbed off dragging himself around the floor. Oh, and corduroy trousers are really good for crawlers as they are protective and hard wearing.

We have the same problem, although it's with regular crawling. T's knees are all red and as she has nappy off time right before her bath (and cralws around like something possessed for about 45 mins - on carpet) we really see it. I think it's being in the water makes it stand out more. Anyway we've been using some regular baby moisturising cream from boots and weleda weather protection cream (as it was to hand when I saw how red they were) and neither have been particularly good. I've just ordered similar leg warmers to those in the link above to see how they work. Will report back if they're any good
