Hi, since xmas eve my little girl has had episodes of pulling knees up, really sweating but really holding her chest with clenched fists or her belly or legs, or whoever is holding her. She looks in so much pain but doesn't seem to cry. Seen loads of Drs, Health Visitors etc but no one seems to know what is wrong. When I mention the knees they say stomach ache and my have colic but unusal in a baby on 9 months. It is so destrssing to watch and we can sometimes distract her out of it but when I am tring to get her to sleep I feel awful watching her in such discomfort but she finally goes off to sleep. Anyone got any ideas or had a similar thing happen to their baby. Thanks

hiya, it really doesnt sound like colic obviously because of your lil 1s age but all i could suggest it could be is her maybe straining to go poo. my 4month old does it all the time, he pratically tries to fold in half wen ur holding him and scrunches his face up. it does hurt him alot of the time and ive been advised to give him water now and then so he doesnt become constapated and doesnt strain to toilet. hope this helps you

Thank you for that but that's what we originally thought but her bowl movements are as normal as they always were. There just doesn't seem to be any pattern to her episodes except the going to sleep bit. She did wake up boxing day with a very chesty cough and we have all had bad sore throats and colds which I think have come from my daughter so I am hoping maybe it is a virus. So far today it has happended once, I had just changed her and she was lying on the change mat watching TV. I called her and picked her up and she goes back to normal...so strange!

I was thinking the same there a Pearlypops, strange though if its not that as its the 1st thing you'd think of. I'd go to a different doctor and get a 2nd opinion, or exaggereate abit to make them sort it out !
Hope you get an answer soon ;\)

Any chance it could be a bit of acid reflux??? That can come on whenever, like when we get heartburn, sometimes for no apparent reason? Worth asking I guess. Good luck, hope u get some ansa's soon. x

Did you ever find out what it was that your baby was doind? Did your baby ever stop doing this? How long did it last?

Your descrption is the closest one I have found to what my daughter has been doing lately. No one can seem to give us an explanation.

Her bowel movements are normal, she eats fine, isn't fussy, but will sit for long periods of time pulling her knees up into her chest (just with her stomach musles and back; no hands). She doesn't cry or seem in pain, but is definitely straining, and starts sweating like crazy.

Please let me know anything that you have discovered on the matter. I am pretty worried.

Thank you.

Sophollie and Sarah. please google the term infantile spasms...this sounds exactly like what I was seeing in my 7 month old son.  they first started a couple months earlier, as what you describe as knees coming up to the belly with the fists clenched to her chest in short episodes. He would also look uncomfortable abd break out into a sweat. Infantile spasms happen most often just before they go to sleep or just after they wake up...Please, PLEASE check this out and try to get it on video to show your childs doctor. It is a VERY serious condition that needs prompt attention. EEG is best for diagnosing this condition as well as having the episodes on video. You Tube also has many videos of this if you are unsure of what you are seeing.
