Any advice on what I'm doing wrong - weaning based question

Hi ladies.

My little one is 6 months tomorrow, and vie been weaning her since about 19 weeks. She is now on 2 meals a day, with a fruit based meal mixed with porridge in the morning, and a veg meal in the afternoon. She also has 3 bottles during the day, with a 4th one at bedtime, which she can often fall asleep before finishing. Our routine is

8am bottle
10am meal
12/1pm bottle
3pm food
5pm bottle
7pm bath and then bottle.

For the last few weeks she has started waking up through the night and taking a full bottle. This is after 2 months of sleeping right through.

My thoughts are she is obviously hungry, but I'm just not sure how I can fit anything else in during the day! The plates of food she eats are huge, and she finishes every 8oz she has during the day. How on earth do I get more into her during the day? Am I doing something wrong?

I though she was just having a wee growth spurt, but it seems to be lasting a couple of weeks now, so I'm thing it might be something else.

Would appreciate any advice xxx

My lo is just shy of 20weeks. Her 1st growth spurt (i presume it was) lasted 10days. She would wake for a night feed at 4am all of a sudden. Im now guessing shes having her 2nd spurt as shes been night feeding again for nearly two weeks!! So it could be a growth spurt? Or just thirst.. Is she drinking much water?
Have you tried a goodnight milk? Some ladies say its helped x

She could possibly be ready for more food? You could introduce a 3rd meal. To give you an idea my LOs eating/milk routine -

7/7.30 milk - Normally 5oz
8.15 Breakfast - Porridge
10ish Snack - rice cake/biscotti (if shes awake, which she rarely is!)
12.00 Lunch - Veg/Meat & pudding
1.30/2ish - Snack (As above)
3.00 Milk - 5/6oz
5.00 Tea - Meat/veg etc & pudding
6.45/7.00 Bedtime bottle 5/6oz.

I found she was only snacking on bottles, taking 3/4oz, especially at the 11am bottle, so we dropped it! She now has 3 bottles, & she good sized meals

I struggled to get milk into her at 6 months & still do now! Offer water throughout day too especially at meals.

HTH, ive babbled...sorry!!xx

yeah I would try introducing a third meal and see how you go. Other thoughts would be that my wee one had a very obvious growth spurt at six months, and I'm afraid that until she 'caught up' with herself on weaning she did need feeding in the night again. I found once she was on protein based meals eg chicken, beef, lentils etc that she was much more satisfied but she was just coming over seven months old when she was ready for that xx

My lo is 7 months old and has been on the following routine since 5 months. He is terrible with milk so I add as much to his food as possible

6 am - 5oz bottle
7.30 - porridge/weetabix etc
9.30 - snack (yoghurt or fruit)
10-12 nap
12.30 - lunch (veg and meat/fish/lentils) plus finger foods
2.30 - 5oz bottle
3 - 4.30- nap
5 - dinner ( same as lunch plus desert)
7 - supper (few mouthfuls of porridge)
7.30 - bed with 6oz bottle

He doesn't take a whole lot in one go and seems to need little but often. He wakes about 50% of the time for a bottle at around 3 am too. He's a string bean too. I just can't seem to fatten him up!

My dd went through a growth spurt at 6 months that lasted around 2 weeks and was feeding in the night, she had previously stopped night feeds at 12 weeks.

Could you try adding more carbohydrates and maybe a dessert with each meal ? Perhaps reducing the milk a bit to accomodate the extra food ?

i'd try to mpve everything back an hour or so so that u can fit in another meal..

8am bottle
9am breakfast
10/11.30 bottle
12.30 lunch
2.30/3 bottle
5pm dinner
7pm bath and bottle

if that works that'll pretty much be it now for a while (time pattern that is), then u may find lo will start dropping bottles and can replace with little snacks ..now lo is 6 montsh u could also try adding more carbs and some proteins into her diet too, higher in calories and more complex to digest so should help to keep her full.

edited to add that even at 2yrs old ds pretty much follow this pattern, just replace the mid morning and mid afternoon bottles with snacks and that's his feeding pattern lol xx

Thank you for all the help ladies.

I gave her a couple of spoonfuls of cereal before her bedtime bottle and she slept right through last night! Hurrah!

I've noticed that she isn't eating as big portions as she has been eating over the last few weeks, so I'm thinking it's maybe a growth spurt, which has lasted for a few weeks.

I had a look at goodnight milk, but it's just milk with cereal in it. She is on Comfort milk as it's nice and gentle on her refluxy tummy, but it's so thick I don't think adding cereal in it would work. And I can't really change her milk as it will upset her tummy. So I think a little bit of warm cereal made up with her milk is the answer!

Thank you ladies, you have been a brilliant help! Xxx
