Wash them very gently with cooled boiled water and cotton wool balls. Eyes are self cleaning so don't do it very often and only swipe gently once with each new piece of cotton wool.

If the white part of the eye is red then go see a dr as it could be conjunctivitus (but very unlikely for baby this age unless you have another sibling with conjunctivitus? or if you've had it?) and they will give you drops.

if you are worried ring your midwife/HV, they will advise. Hope it clears up soon, these babies are such a worry x

My baby has had the same thing since he was 3 days old...it's calleed 'sticky eyes'. Each time the midwife has been round she's said to wipe with cooled boiled water or breast milk. He is now 3 weeks old and only yesterday at my final midwife appt did the midwife tell me that I should have been told to go to the docs after 3 days of wiping if it hadn't cleared up.

We went to the docs today and she prescibed him some eye drops, and said to continue cleanuing with the water, and to massage his tear ducts a few times a day.

Apparently it's caused by the fact that his tear ducts havn't formeed fully yet.

I'd suggest you go to the docs if it hasn't cleared up in the next few days...I wish someone had told me this earlier!

Hello lovely,

firstly congratulations on your new bundle of joy when my little man was newborn he had the sticky eye and i just used to wipe them from corner outwards with a cotton wool soaked in my breast milk and it cleared it up a treat.

Hope all is well x

we had it to and same advice as above very common, you can get the hv out to do a swab test for you just to make sure it hasnt been infected, but it will no doubt just be the tear duct abit blocked,

Congratulations on your LO! DD was born with a gunky eye, I tried the boiled water, breastmilk etc. and Dr prescribed eye drops, none of which made any difference!! My friend told me to massage the inner corner of her eye with my little finger to help clear the ducts - she woke up the next morning and it was completely clear!

we have gunky eyes too. We went to doc's and they took a swab to rule out infection and told us to clean with cooled, boiled water several times a day going from inside of the eye out and fresh piece of cotton wool for each eye. She seems loads better after 24 hours of this although it's seemed much worse first thing in the morning.

My GP was reluctant to prescribe drops unless it becomes a persistant problem though.
