Carla Bruni, Italian wife of the French President Nicolas Sarkozy, has given birth to the couples first child a girl, born just before 8pm local time in Paris.
President Sarkozy accompanied his wife to the private clinic in the morning, and then stayed in touch all day from Frankfurt where he was taking part in meetings about the euro debt crisis. Mr Sarkozy missed the birth, but arrived at the Muette Clinic about 11pm to see his wife and new daughter.
The girl will be President Sarkozys fourth child (he has three sons from two former marriages, and became a grandfather in January), and a second child for Carla Bruni, who has a 10 year old son from a previous relationship. The couple married in February 2009 and have kept details of the pregnancy and impending birth very private. There was no official announcement of the birth from the presidential entourage. Carla Bruni, a singer and former model, is 43, and her new daughter is the first baby born to a sitting President in modern-day France.
