Subject : I feel so guilty
My 10 month old is learning to walk about holding on to things at the mo and this morning he pulled himself up on the tv stand and almost immediately fell on his head then flipped over onto his face before I could catch him. At first I thought he was ok but by 4 o'clock he came up in huge bruises on his face and has a black eye. I feel so awful and like a a completely neglectful mother :( I didn't think he had hit it that hard.
I feel like people will look at him strangely if we go out and I just want to cry.

oh don't feel bad!! its not your fault x
kids are always bumping themselves when they are learning to walk, then once they are running and not looking where they are going, then jumping off things, skateboarding, rollerblading, football, rugby oh the list goes on and on!!
it doesn't get any easier I'm afraid
Anyhoo - please don't feel bad!!

He didn;t even really cry just grizzled a bit. I suppose because he is a baby it looks so much worse. It hasn't stopped him trying to climb the tv stand another million times todat though lol.

Don't feel guilty, even though us mums have eyes in the back of our heads we can't be everywhere all the time. When my eldest daughter(now 2 and a half) first fell and cut her head I think I cried as much as her! It will happen again, and I know exactly what you mean about other people looking. Our HV was at the house a few months ago when my youngest was newborn, my 2yr old was running around doing laps of the living room, flew into the tv stand head first at full pelt and again cut her head, there was a massive bump like an egg on it. After cleaning her up and lots of cuddles all I could think of was that i was glad it didn't happen before the hv came...imagine her coming in and finding that bump on my dd!
When they learn to walk everything seems the wrong height for them...then when they can run you feel like putting a crash helmet on them!
Hope the bruises fade soon!

Ah hun dont feel bad..it honestly isnt your fault, children do these sorts of things and they will be bumping into alot more things as they get older to!
It happens to the best of us, hope the bruises fade soon and dont be too worried what people will think, anyone with children knows what happens! xx

Hun, really don't feel bad. Babies do this sort of thing and I think (from my experience) boys are the worst! The other day I counted 4 bruises of various sizes on Barney's head, plus one on each cheek! He tries to pull up on furniture, then lets go and smacks it with his face, he crawls into walls, he even has been known to hit himself over the head with toys! All you can do is try and remove as many potential hazards as you can and then hope they soon learn better.
