Hi sara,
congratulations on the birth of your beautiful daughter and i'm glad she's home and doing well, i had my daughter 4 weeks early due to me having pre eclampsia! you kindly replied to my blog in oct, as my baby has kidney problems, and you said i could ask you q's as you are the same, we know she only has 1 working kidney and this is hypertrothied but we don't know anything about this, we haven't seen a renal specialist yet, is this hypertrothied kidney a good thing? does it mean it's stronger than a normal kidney? i would love to hear from you.

Hiya,

Sorry I have only just seen this post.

I have a solitary right kidney which has hypertrophied (14cm instead of 9cm), it doesn't cause me any problems other than I have to be careful about UTI's and kidney infections (I had some bad kidney infections before I was diagnosed and there is a scare that they could scar my kidney) but I see a nephrologist (kidney specialist) every 6 months to check my kidney function. It is ok and with education I know what to do to prevent any infections etc.

People can live with only one kidney, it is actually possible to survive on a quarter of a kidney so I have been told.

What did your daughter weigh and what did you call her??

Sara xx

Hi Sara,
thanks for your reply, we called her isla grace she was born on 29th dec,and she weighed 4lb 12oz but she wouldn't feed and dropped a 1lb! but she's 9lb 6oz now and 20 weeks, still not to fussed about feeding so i'v been expressing, at least i know how much she's had.
she's had a few test and her right kidney is dysplastic and hopefully will diminish over time, but her left kidney is enlarged (6.3cm) but it is hypertrophied but it also got a loss of corticomedullery differation! this means the cortex and the medulla looks the same, and the edge looks rough instead of smooth but we have been told that the latter could be because she was early so we are seeing a nephrologist in sheffield next month, i can't wait cos we have had no answers from our doc's! But saying all that you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with her she's doing great and she can come off her antibiotics soon as she hasn't got reflux yay! [/color]Is there any food you aviod or eat alot of due to your kidney, as i'm going to start to ween her in a few weeks, do you have your u&e's checked often? did you have any problems in pregnancy?

amelie looks adorable, how much did she weigh at birth what is she now? and i love the name. is she still under neo natal care?

well bye for now i can hear isla waking she'll be wanting her bottle, thanks again claire x

Hi Claire,

Amelie was born on 23rd December at 33 weeks, she was 3lb 13oz and is now about 11lb odd (getting her weighed tomorrow) and has started weaning, there are no foods that I have been told to avoid, I just have to watch my salt intake and drink loads of water each day.

Amelie is still under the care of a consultant, probably until she is one, I did ask the sonographer to check she does have 2 kidneys and they assured me she has.

My one kidney led to me going into premature labour in a roundabout way, I'm not trying to worry you at all cos everyone's different but because I only have one kidney, only half my uterus developed (i.e the side I have no kidney I have no uterus), it is called a unicornuate uterus and they only found out when I was in labour. This means that if we chose to have anymore children I would have another premature baby but at least it's being monitored. I don't know whether it's too early to tell with Isla but it may be something to ask them about.

Glad she is doing well

Sara xx

Hi sara,
sounds like amilie is doing great 11lbs thats brill! isla isn't putting much on only 1.5oz this week it's been like this for a few weeks she will only take around 15oz in 24 hours! don't think it's to do with her kidneys, she's had oral thrush for about a month cos she's been on antibiotics since day 1! and we can't seem to shift it after 3 precriptions! so she's being referrred to a dietitian she might just need the vitamin fourmula that i add to my milk, which i think she should of been on these since she went down to 3lb 13oz at 10 days! or they might suggest weaning her early but i'm not keen esp with her kidney probs! and i think she will take less milk if she's on solids as well. it's one thing after another bless her she's been through so much already i wish i could i could take all her test and her kidney problems for her!

And i've read that about the reproductive organs being effective before, i think it said that the kidneys r made from the same hormone or something i will ask the nephrologist, i did ask the sonograpther but she didn't have a clue.

thanks for replying, have a great weekend x
