Subject : Worried about the possibility of Downs
Hi,
I am 36 and due to have a Nuchal scan and bloods at 12 weeks. I am just so scared. i have been told they give you a fugure based on the blood results and what they see on the scan. Does everyone go through this and what to do if its shows a high result. Amnio I suppose. :-) THANKS!

Hiya,
Are you having it done at Epsom??? The mw took my bloods a few days before I went for the scan, then I had the scan itself. They still measure the thickness of fluid at the back of the baby's neck, and then they combine that result with the bloods (dont know how they work it out from that) to give you your odds while you're there, all printed out on one sheet for you.
dont panic about it - I know its easier said than done!!
They called me an older mum last week at the dr's. I'm going to be 34 this year!!!!!!!

I too am worried about this. I'm 36 and 13+1 pregnant with baby number 2 (my first is only 6 months old!). We had the nuchal scan and blood test with first baby although we had to pay to have this done privately (£200!!). This time we can't afford to so will have to wait for the triple test when I'm 16 weeks. I really don't know what I will do if I come back as high risk as I don't think I could terminate, especially not at that late stage. I've been told the risk is lower if you've already had a baby, but not sure how true that is! What will be will be I guess. Good luck. I'm sure all will be fine xxxxxx

Hi surreygirl, like you I'm 36. When I went for my 12 week scan they did the nuchal fold measurement and that combined with my blood tests gave me a risk score of 1 in 1560 (or something close) that's better than the natural risk score for our age which is about 1 in 350. I believe if your score is officially a high risk (I think below 1 in 250) you will be talked through options to have further tests. These are amnio or CVS... I believe CVS has a higher risk of miscarriage than amnio but can be done much earlier.
Just remember that your risk score is just an indication of risk... We decided not to have any further tests and our lo was absolutely fine!

Hi Surreygirl, I'm also 36 and from Surrey!! I'm now 6+5 and had my bloods done at 10 weeks plus the nuchal fold scan at 12 weeks. Personally, I am glad I had it done as I am such a worrier and it came back at 1 in 3000. Lots of other ladies on the site had theirs done and they were under 35 so I do think this is standard. It's totally up to you if you have it though. I hope yours has come out low risk.

Hi there,
I had my scan last week and my blood taken, my measurement was 160mm and the sonographer said this was good... but might change with bloods... but got the results through the post on Friday and am 1 in 4000 which was a lovely relief...
I am sure you will be absolutely fine... but I agree with you it is nerve wracking...
Good luck...
A xx (37 years old living also in Surrey..!!)

Hi Surreygirl,
I know just how you feel, I am 38 and I am 5 weeks pregnant. My DS is ten and when I was having him, I had the tripe test and it came back as 1 in 280, I was devastated and didn't know what to do, after a long talk with my midwife i opted for the CVS test. I must say it was ok, the doctor explained everything and i got the results the day after, and we were over the moon with the results.
Now I don't know what to do, but I think I will have Nuncal Scan and bloods done. Then if I need to I would deviantly have a CVS again. The thought of it was much worse than the actual test.
Good luck and please let me know how you go on.
Take care
Lots of love
D X

My name is Sophie and I work for a London based television production company called Renegade Pictures.
We are currently producing a 1 hour authored documentary on pregnancy for the BBC, featuring Cherry Healey. In the film Cherry will meet seven other pregnant women at seven different ages and stages of pregnancy. Through their personal stories and experiences we hope to discover more about the changing trends in conception, pregnancy, birth and early motherhood across women of all ages in the UK.
It is thought that the number of women giving birth over the age of 40 has
doubled in 10 years, and I feel that to illustrate this well it would be
fantastic for Cherry to meet someone close to the age of 40 or over who has become pregnant, either naturally or through a donor egg or insemination.
If there is anyone who would be willing to share their experience with
Cherry or is interested to find out more about the documentary I would love the opportunity to speak to you confidentially.
Please contact me at sophie.mohamedl@renegadepictures.co.uk or 0207 449 3228
Kind regards
Sophie
