Subject : post-birth bleeding

Can those have you who've had your babies please help?

How long did you bleed after your baby was born?

Claudia is three weeks old today and my bleeding hasn't stopped yet. I really can't remember how long it lasted after my first baby was born. This time I had a few problems with the third stage - the cord snapped when they were trying to get the placenta out. I had to push it out myself, which was a total nightmare. At one point I thought they were going to transfer me to hospital. Afterwards though, I felt ok and thought I was recovering well, until Claudia was one week old when I started losing huge clots and what was clearly chunks of the placenta. I've had a course of antibiotics and am feeling much better now, but my bleeding is all over the place. Sometimes it seems to have pretty much stopped, then all of a sudden it will come back heavily. And in the last couple of days its has become heavy and very red again. Sorry if TMI!

Can anyone offer a word of wisdom or two???

Hi reester,
I can only go from my own experience but with my first i bled for about 2-3weeks, with my second my bleeding lasted a lot longer, 5 weeks! I also had massive clots etc, as i had infection and was on anibiotics too. Hope it doesnt last much longer hun.

Hi, about 6 weeks in total, heavy bright red for what seemed like an eternity, then tapered off to like brown stuff its called lochia. My first AF after all 3 babies was horrendous too & took ages to get back to a normal flow!!

Congrats on your new addition BTW! Happy

Hi Reester
i had my son 16 days ago and my bleeding has almost stopped but i was told by the health visitor today that if it almost stops then 1 day it goes heavier again its your bodies way of telling you to slow down as your doing too much increasing your bleed.
This may tie in

with my first lo i lost big clots for a while (couple weeks) and my gp said might need to go for a clean out but the ultrasound showed i was clear enough to finish naturally.

this time round i had heavy on off bleeding (no clots) for about 5-6 weeks
