Subject : Introductionfrom newbie (PCOS & TTC)
Hi
This is my first post though I have been a lurker for a while now. Think I'm going to be here for the long haul so thought it would good to get to know you.
My history...
I'm 29 now came of the pill 13 months ago because I wanted my body to get back to normal as I'm getting married in December. Thought I would give my body a rest in time for a lovely honeymoon baby - If only I'd known!
My AF didn't come back for about 4 months then were really irregular. Luckily I have a great GP who ordered blood tests etc straight away and didn't make me wait 6 - 12mths (How hard that must be).
Blood tests were indicating that ov wasn't hapening so I was referred for an ultrasound which I had 6 months off the pill. The doctor there said it was a clear case of polycystic ovaries and that it was quite severe/the cysts had hardened.
It took a while then to get a gynaecolygist appt since I wanted a female (long story) and the closest 3 hospitals didn't have a female gynae which I was quite surprised about. Anyway had my fist appt today and she has put me on metmorfin(sp). Has anyone tried this with any sucess?
She has also booked me in an HSG scan (where they XRay the tubes) - this sounds very painful and emabarassing but I think I'd bestter get used to this! They will not put me on clomid until I have had the scan which I understand.
Has anyone had the scan? I did try to search on here but the homepage gept coming up? My friend had one and said it was extremely painful - guess I will just have to shut my eyes and think of my beautiful baby yet to be conceived. I have been lucky in that my DP has been brilliant but it is still difficult for men to understand.
Also what can they do if clomid doesn't work. Is IVF the next step (I forgot to ask all these quetions today. Next time I will prepare better!)
I appreciate some of you have been TTC for much longer and I have every sympathy and am only now starting to understand what an emotional, difficult process this is. Any advice/help you can give would be appreciated. Thank you for reading x

Nice to meet you :-) I just moved over to this forum this week. I'm 30, been off the pill 13 months and just went to the docs last night to talk about things.
I went for my FSH bloods today, and going back in a fortnight for my progesterone bloods. Hubby has been given the forms for SA and is going to get that done in a couple of weeks.
I'm pretty sure there'll be someone on here who has been through every step of what you have and will be going through, so don't be afraid to ask and chat away x x

Hi there
I already have onq child which is great but now we want number 2 and we're having lots of difficulties. I've been off the pill for 13 months and only had one menstruation since then. I have not been to a doctor yet because I'm too scared of what they'll tell me.

Hello Jenny and welcome!
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I went to the fertility unit to find out why we hadn't conceived in 2½yrs! Mine weren't anything like as severe as yours, I don't think, but because I'm an old bird (38), they decided to cut to the chase - wasn't given any drugs, as I still appeared to be ovulating, and we went straight to IVF.
I also didn't have to have the HSG, was booked in for one, but at the last minute they told me not to bother. Have heard differing reports about how painful it is, but given what lies ahead with pregnancy and childbirth, we may as well get used to it early :-)
If Metformin and Clomid don't get you pregnant, you could try IUI before IVF. It's cheaper and less invasive, but generally has a lower success rate.
Has your OH had the SA? Are his results normal?
Sorry, I can't be more help, but didn't want to r&r.

Hi jenny + welcome to the site!
I'm a fellow PCOS suffer and have a lot of the classic symptoms to with irregular periods, spots, struggle loosing weight, don't ovulate and like you have a large amount of cysts on each ovary.
I've had the HSG so can help a little with that...its not painful to be honest just a little uncomfortable when they insert the bit that pushes the dye through your cervix- the best thing i found for this was to take a deep breath and let your knees go floppy and it'll be fine. Try not to get yourself to worried about it its no worse than a smear test so i'm told except you get to see your insides too!!!!
I can't help with the meds as yet as i unfortunatly got bad news from my HSG that both my tubes were completely blocked so they wont perscribe it till i get that sorted.
Best of luck with all your tests!!!!!

Hi Jenny,
I too am a PCOS sufferer and am currently on Metformin. I went a whole 8 months with no af (period) before the docs took me serious and sent me to a gynea where i was then diagnosed after an internal scan of my ovaries. I to have multiple cysts on both ovaries. 6 weeks after being on Metformin i got my first af, 39 days after that got a second and 39 after that got my third. I am on CD 38 today so expecting the witch tomorrow. I know i'm not pg this month as not been trying due to a fractured leg. Hopeing she'll come tomorrow so we can get starting again.
My gynea didn't put me on Clomid to start becasue he said there was that many cysts that there would be a high risk of multiple babies due to lots of eggs being released at once although he said if Met didn't work Clomid would be the next step. Due back on 10th Nov so we'll see what he has to say.
We've been trying 14 months now and i am 26 in a few weeks time.
Hope this is a help. Oh and if you are on Met prepare yourself for some sideeffects to behorrid to begin with. Nausea and Met belly. This does wear off after a while once your body gets used to them. Its probably not the same for everyone but this is what i experienced. I've been on them since July.
Good luck and if you want to know any more please feel free to ask.
SLOW xx

Hey Jenny
Welcome. Everyone on here is so lovely and supportive.
It look like I have PCOS too. I am just in the middle of tests to confirm it. I have had a scan and nurse said she could see cysts but is waiting the results of a blood test to confirm it.
I am also waiting an appointment to have a HSG done. The nurse we saw for our inital appointment suggested taking a pain killer before hand to ease the pain. She has also mentioned putting me on metformin before clomid. Hopefully got my result/follow up meeting where we will find out for definite on 12th December

Thanks so much for the welcomes.
It really helps to know there are a few of us in the same boat, when you are surrounded by people having babies(I'm a primary school teacher) it starts to feel like you're the only one.
Thanks for the info about the scan - I had also heard it could be painful so that's a good tip about painkillers.
I hadn't realised it was because of having cysts already that they don't put you on clomid straight away. That makes sense now.
Gypsy - Hi. I hope you get good news from the tests. This forum seems so welcoming x
slow - I felt so sick the first 2 days taking Metfrmin, I have now cut some tablets in half and spread them over the day a bit more. This seems to be helping.
Hope your leg heals soon and you can get bding x
Tammy Retief - I know how you feel about being scared of what they tell you . The only thing I am happy about though is that I went to the doctor straight away so at least I am getting treatment which will hopefully bring baby closer. If I had left it I would still have this journey to go on. It may be something so easy to put right. I hope you go as soon as you feel ready.x
Mrs Amanda - H2B is doing the SA this month so fingers crossed. Good luck with the IVF x
Lilac - Thanks for the info about the scan. Hope they can do something about the blockages. Fingers crossed for you too x
Mrs Calopa - I hope you get some news soon. It's the waiting around that makes everything harder although at least we get some time to prepare ourselves for the next step I suppose. x
Thank you for all your replies and info/advice. Really helpful. What lovely ladies there are on here xx
