Subject : What counts as sleepign through??

People keep asking 'does he sleep through?' and I never know how to answer! What counts as sleeping through. Would it be that he went to bed and didn't stir or need someone to go to him until I wanted him to wake the next morning? Or does it mean that I can go to bed and sleep without having to get up to him at all in the night?

OR WHAT??????

I still have to go in to him generally at least once a night - he goes to bed and sleep at about 6.30 pm and he is generally awake by 6.15 am and he will stir in the night and I go to give him his dummy back or he will wake and chatter to himself and then go back to sleep (but enough to disturb) me but I don't get him up at all in the ngith just go in and settle him while he stays in his cot.

SO WHAT COUNTS??????

I think a lot of people count going 8-10 hours without a feed as sleeping through. In my house we count sleeping through as going to bed at 7.30 and not having to see them again untill the morning lol. If I had to get up to see to them I wouldn't count that as sleeping through but if they just woke me up chattering to themselves over the baby monitor then I would count that. For all I know they could be talking in their sleep!

I consider sleeping through, from the time you put them to bed to getting up in the morning. If you need to get up during that time to feed / soothe / re-settle etc, then that's not sleeping through. However if they wake up but then settle themselves back to sleep without you having to go see them, then that's sleeping through - in my opinion!! LOL

sams always slept throught 7pm-9/10am but the past 2 weeks hes been waking for his dummy as he is cutting his top 2 teeth and the 3rd bottom one all at once. i hate teething Evil

also they will sleep through when they are ready so dont feel under any pressure from what other mums are saying xx

In my my mums generation sleeping through is what baby cakes and bedhead said. The child sleeps through from when you put them to bed until when they wake up in the morning.

The majority of peoplethink this at the mo, although some ppeople speak to say sleeping through and only stirring for a feed.

My lo didnt sleep well to start with, so when she sleeps frpm 9-7am with one feed at about 1ish (eyes still closed). I refer to it as sleeping through to my hubby, as it feels like it, cos I can actually get a decent amount of sleep and shes not having a disturbed sleep. xxx

maybe you should answer 'yes but no but!'. Yes he sleeps through, but no cos i have to put his dummy back in! I would say yes he does, the times when if he doesnt actually wake himself up when he spits his dummy out,

i'd agree with babycakes etc that it is from putting them in bed at bedtime, and not hearing from them at all until morning. in this i also include not putting their dummy in overnight either! that's not sleeping thru'.!!!!

my first stopped feeding overnight about 12 weeks (i think -long time ago!!), but didnt sleep thru til he was 10 months old. this was cos i was up 6-12 times a night putting his bloody dummy in! if they're crying, they not sleepin! now I wasnt sleeping thru and it was because of him!!!!

I agree I would count it as not hearing from them from bedtime till the morning - I dream of those days!

Wondering about getting rid of the dummy but it sounds like hard work!Razz

I dont actually give my lo a dummy. But my FIL goes on about it and says its easy. You just throw the dummy out, have one night when they cry and by the next night they have forgotten! Im not so sure if it is that easy tho!!

I guess if you do throw it away, your not tempted to give in. xxx

Hi I'd say getting rid of the dummy is a great idea! It may not work for every baby but it did for us!
When Max was about 6 months old, I'd had enough of the dummy. He had it every time I put him down to sleep (which, according to current advise, is a good idea!) but then he began waking up every time his dummy fell out, so I'd have to get up, re plug the dummy and settle him down again, up to 7-8 times a night!

One night I just didn't give him the dummy. I did controlled crying with him which was horrible. It took him about half an hour to fall asleep. Then he woke in the night for 2 and a half HOURS!! Crying... but the following night he went down, fell asleep within 10 mintues, and slept all night! I actually couldn't believe how much difference taking away his dummy made.

Good luck hun xxxxxx

I would say sleeping through is putting them down and not waking till the morning.

I think I've been lucky my lo has done this since 12weeks. only wakes occasionly when she gets stuck in the bars.

Hmmm...personally I wouldn't count a quick dummy replug or resettle. If Gabe wakes for his dummy but then goes straight bk to sleep I would still say he "slept through". Generally I put him down at 7pm, he wakes up crying for a cuddle at 9pm (bad habit) but then goes back until 8am. I would say your LO is sleeping through as long as they are not awake for long times in the night, or feeding in the night.
