Subject : IM BACK - A week in hosp, a long story

Hello fellow mummys...

well you know they say alway trust a mothers instinct, well do! i did, and if i hadnt my baby wouldnt be here now, thankfully little DJ is fighting fit after 7 days of strong antibiotics and the scariest 7 days of my life ...

anyway last sunday morning 2am my little baby boy was whimpering (unlike him, would normally be screaming) anyway fed him (1oz was all he'd take) then he fell asleep whimpering still.it got to 6am and i was getting worried, and rang nhs direct who told me to take him to hosp, so took him to local hosp who discharged him as quick as we went in, we had a perfectly healthy baby... apparently...

anyway 6 hours lter and everyone telling me he just has a cold, that im a panicking first time mum, i went to my mums and was really upset and said hes not tright, i got out my thermomter strip and it red high fever, she said to give it 10 mins of trying to cool him before ringing anyone... so 10 mins latr no change we took him to a different hosp a and e,

this a and e took him straight to resus and a whole team of peadiatric docs were there in 2 mins, that night is now a blur of blood tests, temperatures of 39, urine tests, a lumber puncture, canulas and different medical terms, the only word i understood them throughing about was meningitus and 'ACT FAST' so theres me in total despair, falling apart, on my knees bla bla...

anyway they had to wait 48 hours to see if it was meningitus to see if they could grow the bug... the longest 48 hours of my life, my baby had 2 lots of injections through ivf infusion every 8 hours, giving him diahorea and a very sore bum... bless him

anyway thankfully it wasnt meningitus just a really bad infection, and the docs told me on day 3 they hadnt expected him to survive, and that i had a fighter, anyway he lost 1/2 a pound in those 3 days and i was really scared, then he turned around on day 4, was placid, cried when he wanted feeding and started feeding really well

today on day 7 my little guy had gone from 7 pound 8 oz to 9lb 1 oz and looks great, hes been given the all clear and looks fab. from day 4 to 7 his temp was 36, breathing and heart rate perfect, hed made a miraculous recovery!!!

mums trust your instinct, i did and my babies here to tell the tale, dont let hosps pawn you off as a first time worrying mum.

sandie and dj 23 days old :) and fighting fit xxxxxxx

Awwww bless ya hun.......so glad everything turned out ok!! You hear that so often, hospitals sending you away, it's just a cold or whatever and make you feel like some neurotic 1st time mum.....am so glad you trusted ur instincts!!!

I hope you think about putting in a letter of complaint with that other hospital....I know they can be busy places etc but that's no excuse for totally disregarding you and little DJ without a proper examination etc.

xxx

OMG thats awful, how terrifying for you! So pleased lo ok now.

I wouln't leave your letter anonymous, if you ever needed to go they would never know it was you. I'd make it a formal complaint, copy in the A&e manager but maybe contact the hospital PALS dept tomorrow for the complaints procedure.
Even if you were being a neorotic 1st time mum (which you blatantly were not) they should have thoroughly checked over a new born!

Thankfully you trusted your judgment. The alternatives don't bare thnking about.

So pleased to hear that he's ok. I think its terrible that the hospital sent you away without a proper check, most hospitals HAVE to give examinations to all babies under one year regardless of the reason they were brought in so they might have broken procedure!
Do complain but dont worry about being anonymous as they wouldnt know it was you if you went there.

Oh I am glad everything is fine now but you can't be too careful. Lucky you trusted your instincts. Take care and try and get some rest now.

Don't make your letter anonymous - they will need to pull your sons notes and look through what happened. I work in A&E and we would never know who had complained etc anyway so don't worry about future care like that. Just make sure someone looks at it properly. Your son was seriously ill and the doctor involved needs to be aware of what they missed, and most would actually want to know!
So glad you trusted your instinct and that your baby is OK.

oh hun, sorry sorry to hear this. I am so glad he is ok now. We had a similar thing with chloe at the same age as DJ. had to go through all you had to with him and so completely know how you feel. make sure you complain - they have to learn from their mistakes. Glad all better now. def trust your instincts!

Poor you and little DJ, glad that he is well now.

I agree with making a formal complaint, it's good you had a diff a&e to go to and you were taken seriously there.
