Subject : Downs result not good

After spending all day Tuesday up at the hospital having bloods taken and being told I need a renal scan as my urine is showing a really high protein level, my midwife called me yesterday to say my downs test has come back 1:66 and we need to see the consultant on Tuesday.

Naturally I was in bits yesterday when she told me and couldn't really speak to her, mind went completely blank and I just numbly wrote down the time of the appointment. She did say to me that after discussing things with the consultant if we decided to have the amnio test it would be done there and then.

I spent most of yesterday in tears thinking worse case scenarios, if we had the amnio test and it caused a m/c, if we have the test and it comes back positive. if we don't have the test we've got another 20 weeks of worry. My partner is being brilliant and keeps telling me everything will be fine. We haven't broached the "what will we do if" conversation, we will talk about it over the weekend.

I want to go in on Tuesday prepared and ready for the amnio test if after talking to the consultant we decide to have it. I'm still waiting on my anomoly scan (called x-ray today and she only just found the card requesting the scan after me handing it in to her last Tuesday). Would this show up any abnormalities?

I don't know, my head is just all over the place. Has anyone else experienced this or had the amnio test? Any advice just now would be great.

Bettyford, I am sorry to hear about your results, it must be so hard for you with all the decisions to make. Someone at work had results that were 1:13 and the baby was absolutely fine. As SB has said if you look at it the other way there is 65 chances that it won't have downs.

Try and stay positive.

Thinking of you.

A xx

Thanks for your replies ladies. As I posted in the pregnancy forum they've made me feel a lot more positive about things.

I'll read up a bit more on amnio testing. The thing that really worries me is the risk, albeit small, of miscarriage. I'm hoping things will become a lot clearer once we've spoken to the specialist.

Thank you all again though.

i'm so sorry to hear that the news hasnt been good, but still it doesnt mean the worst. my friend is having her second baby and her tests came back high risk so she opted for an amnio- her results were fine and she is still pregnant. i know there is a 1% risk of a mc but that is sooooo small.

its a really personal decision what you do and only you know how you feel. really hope it all works out for you, thinking of you lots xxxx

Hi, sorry, I've not been on the forum for a while and missed your post!

As has been mentioned, we had a similar ratio after the blood test. We huffed and puffed and decided to go for the amnio. Not necessarily with a view to terminate (although if I'm honest, we hadn't ruled that out) but to prepare ourselves.

Of course, I was petrified about the amnio, having read all sorts of things. There is a slim chance of it causing mc, but we decided it was a risk worth taking. It's only an average of 1% chance, if you have a good, experienced doctor, the odds are much better. Just don't let a trainee near you!

Anyway, the actual procedure wasn't as bad as I had thought. I didn't watch the needle going in, but OH did, and he was impressed at how slim it is.

We've got the chromosonal results back, and we don't have any of the trisomies, which is reassuring.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.
