Subject : Terry nappies

I'm thinking of buying the mothercare pack of terry nappies - any thoughts? I get a £30 grant from the council so it wouldnt be money wasted, and the other types of reusables just seem soooo expensive (tight budget).

So! A few questions.

Folding - is it difficult?!
Size - Will they fit any size baby (sorry if this is a dumbass question! I have a big baby - 16lbs ish at 14 wks!) - would I need to change nappies as he gets bigger?
Wraps/waterproof pants - can you use those funky wraps with terry nappies or do you stick to the plain waterproof pants?
Nappy bucket - right sooo...does it smell?! lol! and how many nappies do u need & how often do you wash them?
I am thinking about dry pailing with tea tree oil and washing at 60 with bio powder as it brings stains out better. I know you're meant to use non bio with babies but mines never had a problem with normal powder for his clothes BUT would this be OK on his little bum? Also how often do you wash them?
When out and about where do you keep nappies...in a nappy sack until you get home?

Thank you!!! x

Terry nappies

Hi Hun, I'll do my best to answer but I've never used flat terries myself!

Folding-Think it's easy enough, just a matter of practise. If you have a look here http://www.kittykins.co.uk/advice/id/20 it shows you the different folds and how to do them

Size-I think that standard terries are supposed to fit up to potty training, you just fold them differently as they get bigger.

Waterproof pants-You should be able to put most wraps over a folded terry although some will fit better than others. I've used my normal wraps (Motherease rikki) over a prefold (bit like a flat nappy) and they fitted absolutely fine.

Bucket-The only time mine smells is if I forget to close it lol. I dry pail without any oil (keep forgetting to try it) and wash them every other day. I use bio liquid and haven't had any problems. You only need to use half as much washing stuff as for a normal load and if you can, run an extra rinse afterwards. If you get detergent build up on the nappies it makes them less absorbant.

I've had a quick look at the mothercare kit and tbh I wouldn't buy it. There's nothing wrong with the nappies but most of the other stuff you either don't need or can buy cheaper/better from else where. I think that if you only have 12 nappies you will be washing them before you have a full load just because you have run out. The plastic pants are supposed to be a bit rubbish as well, because you can't adjust them they tend to leak alot as they don't fit well. Nappy pins are a faff! you can buy something called a nappy nippa which does the same job as a pin much more easily and without any risk of sticking a pin into anyone. If I were you I would buy:

3x6 Terry nappies from mothercare
cheap lidded bin/bucket from B&Q/Wilkinsons etc
nappy nippa's, paper liners and wet nappy bag (for when you are out) from somewhere like Kittykins
3xwhatever wraps you fancy, these are the more expensive bit, can be £8 each but worth it if it means you get no leaks and keep using the nappies.

I think that's everything you would need, it works out a bit more expensive but your grant would still cover at least half of it and it would propably be worth the extra as it means the nappies will work better and you are more likely to carry on using them.

Hope that helps, sorry for the super long post
Kerry xx

Terry nappies

Hi, I bought two Mothercare terry starter kits...they are fine & I'm still using them but I gave up on the pins for Nappi Nippas & the plastic pants for Nature Babies popper nappy wraps & I hardly use the nappy soak & occassionally add it to a wash when I remember.

If I was buying again then I would go for a better quality terry that was actually square - Mothercares nappies aren't square so some folds aren't so neat! Buy Nappi Nippas. Boots plastic pants are the best budget option & machine washable & Boots liners are better than the PHP ones you get in the nappy set.

Folding the nappies can be time consuming but this is always something I do whilst watching TV. There was another thread on here about folds & someone said to look on youtube & I 'googled' nappy folds to see what else was 'out there' as I knew a couple my mum had shown me when I was little & used on my baby doll! The diagrams on the Mothercare packet are useless, I tried & couldn't understand them & I'm an experienced nappy folder! LOL!
I believe Zorbit are a better terry if that's the route you wish to go down.

You can use wraps over terry nappies & I soon moved onto these - plastic pants when I was little were like wraps too, my mum gave me two of mine she found Surprised - I haven't used them! LOL!

re size: the beauty of using terry squares are that you adjust them to fit you LO, mine is 14 months now & the only change I've made is that I now put bamboo boosters in for extra absorbancy.
Check out my LO & his nappies!

I bought junior joy prefolds and they are only £7.50 for a pack of 6 nappies. I also bought baby beehinds wraps for £5.99. I bought 2 packs of prefolds and 4 wraps. I also have some shaped ones to keep me going. Easy peasy nappies 5 for £13 (require boosters I bought 6 for £5). Search on ebay- so cheap!
