Subject : Need advice.
Hey, my girlfriend just gave birth to my daughter Hannah last month and we used the surname that my gf uses because she asked and I didn't think it seemed big a deal to be honest. Now everyone keeps telling me that it will cause me problems in the future proving the identity that I am her father. Could someone please enlighten me?

Hi, im studying law at uni so hopefuly can help. r u named as Hannah's father on the birth certificate? If u r then the surname should not cause any problems and u shud not have any problems proving paternity. Also, if u r the named father on the birth certificate u have the same rights as Hannah's mother unless a court decided differently in the future(which i hope this never happens). Hope this helps and don't worry. If in the future u did change yuor mind and wanted Hannah to have your surname or join the names together you can change it by deedpoll.
Tara.

hmm bit of a strange one really...we're giving our son my fiances surname because basically when we get married he'll have that name anyway...seems more sensible? we only ever considered names that went with his surname...we never even considered my surname...did she give any reasons why she wanted the baby to have her surname? as tmw85 said though as long as you're on the birth certificate it shouldn't be a problem :-)

SBJr had my surname as I wasn't married to his father (thank god) and he is also not named on the birth certificate (his choice not mine). However, we ended up in court over access etc and it wasn't even mentioned that he wasn't on the birth certificate or his surname was different. Wasn't an issue at all (just everything else was )
We're now in the process of changing SBJr's surname to Takers surname now we are married and its quite easy - just need to get round to it properly!!
