Subject : powder that doesn;t completely dissolve?
i make up my bottles by allowing boiled water to cool in the bottles and then adding the powder as and when i need to. however when i add the powder to cold water it doesn;t all dissolve. i can see some powder still floating on top of the milk even after it has been shaken alot and when the bottle is finished it remains in the top of the bottle. do any of you have the same problem??
i have started to make up my bottles as and when i need them as mich as i can i.e. boiling the water fresh and adding the powder when the water is still quite hot and then cooling it in time for the feed.
does anyone else get round this problem in a different way??
thanks, marie x

Hi hun
You need to add the powder to freshly boiled water, or it wont kill off the bacteria in the milk powder (the water has to be above 70c) I used to make my bottles the same as you until my health visitor told me it could make her ill. Your only suppost to make 1 bottle at a time as well (although this isnt practical at night) and you have to use in within 2 hours. Hope this helps x x

I really wouldnt worry about making up one at a time with freshly boiled water above 70 c. This is obviously a new guideline and up until recently noone made bottles this way, there is just not enough time in the day, and all our kids have been fine with bottles or at least water made up in advance. Health visitors etc are constantly trying to put a downer on mums who formula feed by trying to frighten them by saying things like that, about milk having bacteria that can make your baby ill, sorry but its a load of s***. Theyre just trying to make it difficult for us, almost to try and teach us a lesson for not breastfeeding. My 2 boys always had bottles made up in advance kept in fridge or at least made up with cool boiled water then powder added later and are happy and healthy and are very rarely ill,so im sorry but its a load of bollocks x

hi - thanks for your opinions.
i think i'm just going to make up bottles one at a time with freshly boiled water when i'm at home or my mams where its convenient to and then just use cooled boiled water when i am out and about. you could drive yourself mad trying to follow all the guidelines to the letter couldn't you!!
thanks, marie

We make up our lo's bottles for the day in one go, using freshly boiled and cooled water and just add the milk powder when needed. It takes a little while for the powder to disolve but it does after a minute or to with gentle swirling and shaking so it doesnt froth up too much.

Hi Toddy
We make 4 bottles at a time - boil the kettle and then put the bottle lids on and let them cool down in room temp till we need them
HV said that you have 24hrs to use this water and it's fine to add the powder in the bottle as and when you need it, only lasts for 2 hours then. This works fine unless you are using an easy digest milk as it is thicker... it's also a lot easier and the powder disolves fine in cooled water

I have recently put cameron on comort milk (easy digest to help with colic) and because its so think it doesnt dissolve as well.
i was finding that the powder was not dissolving and was sticking to the side of the bottle even after the feed.
I make 24 hours of cooled boiled water and refridgerate. then warm this water n the micro 9naughty i know but i shake it really really well) so its quite hot, above 70degrees, add the powder and shake till dissolved. then i cool the bottle to drinking temp under the cold tap. this is pretty much the DOH guidlines as im adding the powder at a heat that will kill bacteria and then cooling the bottle for him to drink.

I started bottle feeding at about 6wks, i sterilised all bottles then filled them with cooled boiled water, but i used to put 1 or 2oz less than needed in, then about 10mins before feed due (i was lucky he feed almost like clockwork!) i'd boil the kettle, add the last 1 or 2oz then add the powder, it dissolved properly really quickly and bottle was right temp to feed. If we were out i'd take a small vacuum flsk with water in ready to add.
Both my sil and friend did this from when baby was born and so far no ill effects in anyone, my lo is almost 8mths. Obviously this is great till they decide they don't want it warm anymore and room temp is fine then it's shake, shake, shake till it's dissolved!
