Subject : Going from 3 hourly to 4 hourly feeds

Hi all, at the moment I feed Mollie (12 wks) about every three hours during the day. Originally I fed on demand and found we fell into this routine of 3 hourly feeds. She will go up to 11 hours at night without a feed (has on a couple of occassions recently) so I do know she can go longer.

I have noticed over last few days that she is generally feeding well every three hours (150ml+) but when it comes to her 6pm feed she only takes 90ml max. I then feed her again at 8pm before bed and she generally drains the bottle (180ml). I wondered if by extending her feeds to every 3 1/2 or 4 hours whether she would take more at each feed and reducing the number of feeds.

Any advice appreciated. Liz x

Hi Liz,

I'd maybe try just nudging each feed time by 15mins and then seeing if you can say bath her around 5.45-6pm and then give her a bottle for 6.30ish and then she might go down for 7pm? Does she still have a dream feed at about 10ish?

Ellen fitted into that sort of routine by about 15 wks, but was breastfed so could never tell how much she had.

Might be worth a try.

Rachael

I can't remember how old Poppy was when we went to 4 hourly feeds but I noticed the same as you, she wasn't taking the whole bottle at every feed and towards the end of the afternoon wasn't interested in it at all. I started by increasing the time between feeds by ten minutes every couple of days and after about 10 days we were at 4 hourly feeds and I increased the amount of milk given by an ounce.
I hope this helps!
xx
