Subject : Questions, questions, questions!!!!!

1) Grobags!
What age did you start using them? Tommy is coming up 4 wks and seems to wriggle out of blanket and sheet and wakes up cold but dont know if he is tooo young for his grobag!

2) Gloegg Thermometer!
This has sent me bloody paranoid some nights! Cannot get the temperature down in our room no matter what I try. Have a fan on and window open and gloegg is always on bloody red but does not seem half as hot in our room as it was in the hospital and one midwife kept shutting the bloody window every time I opened it!

3) Bottle-feeding!
Does anyone make up their bottles and put them in the fridge? I always did this with my previous 2 boys (now 15 and nearly 7) but now the "rules" have changed I seem to be forever faffing about making bottles!

4) Sex!!!!
Well, we managed to fit this in earlier this wk (3 wks after a section) and now am bloody panicing! I was sterilised after my section but am now scared that it hasnt worked! Also worrying that did it too soon - how long did you all wait? Sorry if this one is a bit personal but its been playing on my mind.

Obviously today is a neurotic day lol!!!!

Thanks ladies,
Love Lee

hi lee, gro bags you can use for babies over 8lb but although mine were all over 8lb at birth i wasited about 3 weeks.

Glo egg thermometer, must admit i am a bad mum I never checked the temperature of Isaacs room, maybe that is because he is my 4th and I dont tend to worry about things like that because I do remember being really stressy about it when i had my first 12 years ago.

Bottles i cant help with sorry.

Sex, bloody hell girl you were keen, I used the "I cant possibly do it before my 6 week check" line for as long as i could (didnt have my 6 week check till 8 weeks)LOL! although the m/w did tell me that as soon as you feel up to it then it is fine.

Grobags- you can get ones for a lower weigh but usually about 10lb is the weight to put them in.

Gloegg- I had one and got rid of it because im sure it wasnt correct! Always onr ed and never went down. Like you i got paranoid so sold it!

Bottles- i use to make them up but since my son had a bug i dont even chance it (didnt have it because of bottles!) i now just boil the kettle and let water cool in bottles then stick em in fridge until needed and heat up and them add powder. That way i know the milk is nice and fresh

Sex- Cant help you with that one!! Im a single mum and have no man in my life (good thing for me! lol)

hi. gro bags can be used from when your baby is 10lbs or over in weight. as for the bottles when i have bottle fed i have always made them up and stored them in a fridge, i don't see anything wrong with that, there are so many things that we are told not to do now a days it's stupid. can't help about the sex question as i have always been 4 months + post having baby before venturing down that path.
try to relax, hope you are feeling better about some of these things. take care.xxxx

hi lee!

you sound just like me!!

1) grobags! - as long as they are above the recommended weight (i think it about 8lb?- they might all be different), and are dressed accordingly, i used mine from about 6 weeks

2) just see if you have a different thermometer to check your room. otherwise carry on doing what you are doing, and adjust Tommy's clothes etc

3)the research from WHO in the last few years does recommend no longer making milk up and storing in the fridge for up to 24hrs. research found the bacterial count in the milk that was almost 24hrs was massive. they do now recommend making it up then feeding!! however, i make my water up for a 24hr period, then add powder, mix & feed each time!! (of course my other 2 had it kept in the fridge like yours did!! - they are 6 & 3!)

4) i was also sterilised at C/S, and even now doubt they did it!! DESPITE the fact both the scrub midwife & recieving midwife are my friends (i'm a midwife too), and i have seen the histology report, i really wish i had insited on looking at my removed tubes!! - of course, was just really chuffed to have a baby at the time!!
as for the bonking, as long as you felt comfortable doing it, you should be ok!

and dont forget, all mums are neurotic - not just you!! lol!!!

love nicki

Thanks ladies!!!

Tommy was 8lb 13 at his last weigh in which was 8 days ago so think the gro bag will come in very soon!

Sammy - it must be something to do with the gloegg thing! I moved mine to test it and put it on in the kitchen where the door is usually open and it still only went down to 21 today and it really isnt warm (in fact its bloody cats and dogs AGAIN)!!

And the reason I couldnt wait for the sex is because I had major SPD (wheelchair bound for last 6 wks) and I bloody needed something that didnt involved a crappy nappy lol

Ollier01 - glad its not just me lol. They did have problems doing my sterilisation and said they couldnt do it but then got another doc in who managed it but for some reason I am not convinced. Thing is I am broody again - Tommy is soooo good and the only reason Im not having another one is coz of the SPD and DH telling me NO WAY - NEVER AGAIN!!!

Oh well, what will be will be!!!

Hiya

I've been putting Reiss in his grobag from the word go - oops, didn't realise you were supposed to wait! He's fine and it's not too big for him or anything so I'll continue to do so.

As for sex, we had a go after 2 weeks (as you know I was also section and sterilisation) and it was absolutely fine BUT where I'd stopped bleeding I had a massive amount of blood come out - I nearly had a heart attack cos I thought I was haemhorraging (sp) but it settled down although another 2 weeks on I'm still bleeding! Don't know how long after you're supposed to bleed for - I never bled more than 2 weeks with my other 3.xx

Hi lee mate,

Have you gto an actual growbag or a version of it? i have a version and mine ok from 7lbs. i didn't use it on chloe until about 6wks tho and only cos she was then in a travel cot and the covers wouldn't fit or stay tucked in. tbh i wish i had used it sooner cos the best thing since sliced bread in my opinion!

i too have a growbag egg thermometer and mine is also always high - even at 2am, with the window open it still says 23 degrees minimum! tbh i only use it as a guide, i feel what the weather is like, how i feel etc and judge it that way - i've not got too wrong yet i don't think tho prob a bad mummy for doing it.

as i said to u, i do completely make the bottles n put in fridge for 24hrs. i get a fresh one out after every feed to gets to room temp as this is the temp chloe prefers, tho would take it warmed or cold!

as for sex, i can't remember when we did but that sounds about right. like karen, i found i bled again afterwards. we did it when i thought it had stopped but oh no back to pads again!

don't stress about the sterilisation thing. just make sure protection gets used and perhaps see the doc if still worried to be sure.

take care hun, big kiss for Tommy!

lara xx

I have now made up bottles for the rest of the day and put the groegg back in its box!!!!

Lara, the ones I have got are "versions and I think they are coming out of the drawer tonight! Tommy just sprawls out and fidgets kicking the covers off so think he only really wakes up now coz he is chilly (no matter what the damn egg said!!!). It was that bloody thing that sent me stupid on my first night home from hospital when I had yet to unpack my brain lol I never had anything like that when I had Keiran or Ollie and used common sense but seem to only just be regaining that now!

These sleeping bags are all new to me as well - never had them with the other 2 but thanks for the advice, maybe will get a bit longer to sleep in.

hello, just a quick reply as visitors over

the grobag egg...we brought one and I heard a mixture of reviews.
Ours is only 1 degree out. We have a temperature for the bath which is accurate with our air conditioner, which is 1 degree less than grobag. It has been really warm at the moments and at 6pm it is 24'C in our bedroom. We have to have the air con on till about 2 am to get the room to stay at 20-21'C.

A grobag has arrived so i will see what the freebie thermometer reads!

must dash. xxx

We have been monitoring the temp in our room ready for LO's arrival (due today!) using a Grobag egg. We haven't yet compared it to another thermometer but I reckon it's about right. It is usually yellow (reading 19 degrees) and by the time I go for my 3am wee it is orange (reading 20.something degrees). We live in a cottage with thick walls and single glazed, drafty cottage windows so even on hot days it stays fairly cool. It gets hotter in the night because at the moment we are sleepng with our door closed to keep the cats out and I think our body heat and breath warms it up.

As from tomorrow the cats will be shut downstairs and we will keep our door open which I think will result in temp staying on yellow throughout the night.

I don't think you need worry if it is on red and you cannot get it down so long as you adjust baby's clothing accordingly - this may mean baby not needing to have any bedding - just a sleepsuit or vest or even just a nappy if it's very very hot. Better that baby is a little cool than too hot.

In my experience most people think their houses are too cold when they are at the correct temperature because people are so used to double glazing and central heating. When I visit friends I always think their houses are way too hot because I'm used to a house with a few drafts! WhateeeEver!

I know what you mean about the hospitals though! There is no way my hospital has a temperature between 16-20 degrees - it's like a day at the Eden Project! LOL! When my sister had her baby she nearly passed out with the heat when she had transferred to the post-labour ward and like you they kept shutting the window once she's opened it saying that baby couldn't regulate it's temperature yet. And that was in February! I shudder to think how hot it will feel when I go in this month! WhateeeEver!

40 weeks today!! yippee!

I am a naughty mummy and never had any kind of thermometer for Gabriel. Or baby monitor. I'm a worrier (like you obviously were about it lol) and knew a thermometer would make me panic! So I just do without and go by how he feels.

My grobag says its from 7.7lb so Tommy should be fine in it.

Bottles...personally I think that ones up to you. It is a nightmare cos you're not supposed to make bottles up and keep em in the fridge due to the bacteria breeding BUT you're also not meant to make the water in advance cos the powder needs to be added to water at least 70 degrees as its not sterile....RIDICULOUS! I make the water in advance and add the powder because i go out a lot and dont like the thought of bottle being left, others I know make bottles up and keep in fridge. Both methods are fine IMO.

We also waited 3 weeks after my section...used condoms tho...no more little accidents for me!!!

Redpod - the hospital I went to it was ridiculous. I had my lo friday 9th may which was a VERY hot weekend and stayed in 2 nights. It was boiling, I swear the hospital had heating on as well and YEP they moaned at me for opening the window and dressing my lo in a vest. They also told me I had to put him in a vest AND a babygrow and put 3 blankets on him whenever a midwife came in the room!!! Not like he was a little baby either!

Did you find it was the older midwives who shut the windows? It was soooo hot in the ward and the older ones kept shutting it and telling me off but one night a young midwife came in and opened all the windows and the ward door to let some fresh air in!!!! WTF!!!

We could all finally breath when she did that! I had a fan pointed at me as well - it was stiffling!

hi oldermum its sarah (remember the whole ex bastard thing)!
anyway, ciaran 6weeks ld, came along eight weeks early, just wanted to say hi really.
your lo look so cute!

oh dont no if this will help but ciaran in growbag now for past week, he 5lb and i got o-3 months as he small obviously. he love it because he hate his arms being around the blankets, solves the problem!

the bottles i make up and keep at room temperature for up to 12hours. ciaran was in special care for five weeks and they said better than putting in fridge and then heating up.told me to check when i go to use bottle no lump bits then all fine.

as for the sex, well jason came over two weeks after ciaran born and (yes i know i shouldnt have) we had sex then. even worse spur of moment thing and used nothing,l so clever arent i? anyway, im not pregnant its been four weeks and ive had period too.i had normal vaginal birth, and had sex after two weeks so i guess its just whatever suits yourself, unless you got stitches obviously. sarah xxxx

Hi babe i have a thermometer on my monitor and our bedroom is normally 23 degreesso i just drss daisy in a sleepsuit and a one tog growbag. i am terified she will die of cot death becuse the tempretureistoo high some nights it has gneup to 25 and i cant sleep for worying custhen it drops in early hours. on back of mothercare bags it tells you what you should dress baby i depending on tempreture i found this helpful. Imglad even third time mummies get confused by it all.
I was really confused by the whole bottle making issue and i used to store milk in fridge but then you hae to warm it up. i findthe easiest way is to sterilize your bottles and put freshly boiled water that has cooled or 20 mins then just add your powder when tommy is ready for it if he wont take it at room temp which you should be able to get him to do at his age just add an extra ounce of feshly boiled water to warm it up before you add powder. Honest mate so much easier when you go out for day as you can keep water in bottles for 24 hours rather than worrying about how long your milk will staychilled and fresh n your changing bag.

I have a smaller, lower rate sleeping bag from mothercare. It's called a Bundle snoozie sleeping bag 1 tog for newborns over 5lbs.

We have the egg thermometre and our room always seems cold but the temp says it too warm! I will use my own judgement when the baby comes.

Can't help with the sex thing as I haven't had my baby yet...

Louise.

Hi Lee

I have been putting Kai in his grobag for 4 nights now and he is just over 3 weeks old, he seems to like it.
I also make my bottles in advance, let them cool down then put them in the fridge and heat them as and when i need them.
As for sex, my DH is desperate but i am still bleeding so not sure if i should or not. I think he may waste away if i don't do it soon though lol.

Hope that helps
