Subject : Temp of 39-40!

Ellie is running a screaching temp and even with calpol and a new antibiotic for her ear infection it is through the roof. She is now sat on Garys knee after a walk outside in her nappy and a cool bath. I have to say im sort of glad i rang work and took the night off as i couldnt leave her. They were actually very good about it but im sure i will have to work extra next week to make it up to them. Anyway i thought id just let you all know my wee angel is sick, well not sick as she isnt vomiting etc but she is very doopy and sleepy with the temp and i am worried about her as it is so high and isnt coming down. If it gets much worse i will be sitting her on a bed of ice cubes as i dont want her to start fitting etc. I hope all other babies are well. x

Diane I'm sorry to hear that Ellie is not well. I hope her temp comes down as it is quite high. If its the same tomorrow I would take her to the docs. Let us know how she is. Hope you don't have a bad night with her.

We called docs out at begining of year because Jacks temp was over 100, the dosy get didnt bring a thermometer told me to take his temp, when I told him what it was he said thats fine then asked me if he needed antibiotics or not! WTF??!!

Oh hun I hope shes feeling better soon. Its soo scary when their temp goes sky high like that. Hopefully she will cool down a bit for you. When Amy had the high temp lately I found that the only thing brought her temp down was the nurfen as well as the calpol but the calpol on its own wasnt doing a thing. I'm not sure whether its 6 months or a year that they can take nurofen from but if you werent sure ring out of hours & ask them.

Give Ellie a big hug from me xx

Hey Diane - Nic used to get an ear infection with every tooth she got and the only thing that ever brought it down was nurofen. For the period that she was teething I always kept a dry antibiotic and a bottle of neurofen in the house as the only indication I would get of her having an ear infection was that her temp went sky high. You can give it from 3 months - I've been giving it to Rory for teething when he's really in pain as it reduces inflammation. Hopefully the antibiotic kicks in soon and she starts to feel better ...... they are such a worry! Just hope she's not going to be like Nic - I worried about how many antibiotics she had in a year - but was nothing could be done about it.

Good luck and hope you get some sleep.

I also should have said ......... though she may be a bit young for it yet - but a way we used to get Nic's temp down was letting her suck on icepops ........ can't remember what age from tho - sorry. It always worked quickly and got rid of the worry of fitting until the neurofen kicked in.

Poor Ellie, hope hse feels better soon. Whatever you do for the temp dont put anything cold on her head like a cold cloth or anything cause it only makes it worse, it wont help the temp at all x

Hi guys, i was going to come on at 1am as indeed we were still up. Her temp broke at 41 and i was going to take her to hospital as that is so high her organs were cooking at that temp. I thought id give her a warm bath, ive heard about people getting that done to bring down a temp and it worked, almost immediatly. It drew her blood out to the skin and away from her organs and dropped till 38 pretty quick, with the antibiotic and calpol with the nurofen [thanks Gill] it came on down at about 2 am. Oh i should have said before, a good way of knowing that a babys temp is down and going to stay down is by their feet, if their toes are warm and pink then their temp isnt too bad, if their legs and feet are cold it is normally quite high and worth rubbing their feet to draw the fever away from their heads.
Soprry, just a bit of nursing knowlegde to help anyone else if their babies are ill.
Now she has the runs [sorry tmi]. She was up at 3 and i heard her going [tmi] and it was up her back, down her front and i have to say its the first time she has ever dirtied her bed etc. She is still going but it is so watery Anonymous LOL that it soakes into the nappy like pee.
Anyway she is much better in herself and im hopeing she will be ok now. Thanks for your replys, its so nice to know you all care. xxxxxxxxxx

Glad to hear you got her temp down - such a relief for you. Thanks too for the tip about rubbing their feet.

The antibiotic is probably contributing to her upset stomach - but I have to say your posts shot me back to the cycle of 'temperature, ear infection, runny poo then nappy rash' that we used to have everytime Nic cut a tooth ....... and the docs said it wasn't connected to teething - PAH! They had just decided to put vents in when it stopped, just like that - wasn't anything to do with the fact that she'd cut all her teeth by then .. of course not!

*crosses fingers and hopes Rory will be different!*

Hope she continues to improve ... isn't it sods law that things like this start just as you go back to work?!

Take care

Oh I can remember nappies like that!!!! So glad to hear that you got her temperature down. Like Gill says it could be a sign that a tooth is about to pop through too. I know this is way tmi but when I take antibiotics sometimes they can have a similar effect on me!!! (I told you it was tmi!!)

How is she today? Is she in good form? xx

Oh, thank goodness she is getting better! Thanks for the tips re the toes and feet...but maybe you should consider having one of those premium phone numbers and we could call you with our baby related illness problems...then you could make money from just telling us what to do, and you could give up your other work then!!! xxxx

Poor little Ellie. Everytime Georgia cuts a tooth she gets an ear infection. Shes been on so many antibiotics. Her bottom 2 and 1 top 1 is through and now you can see 3 more about to brake thro the gums at the top. Its horrible when they're suffering isnt it. Nurofen is the only thing that workls for Georgia, however when i saw the Gp last time he said that because of her weight (26lb) she could have 5ml of calpol as 2.5ml wont touch her. Cant remember how much Ellie weighs?

Runny nappies lovely-i remember then when georgia had the rota virus-gross!!!

Poor Ellie for having such a high temperature, another thing to do if her temp goes high again is to take her nappy off it will bring the temp down really quickly. Sorry to hear about her upset tummy, maybe is the antibiotics doing it.

Hannah, I've always given Ellie 5mls of Calpol since she turned 3 months!!! I think nurofen is really good too, so does Ellie, she prefers that to calpol.

Ellie is 20lbs and i too have given her the 5ml from about 3 months as the 2.5 never done too much for her.
I went to asda today and she took very sick very quickly and i had to open a new bottle in asda and give it to her right there and then. She is in better from but still not herself and still not right. Its funny, i remember mummy telling me that she just knew when we wrnt right and id always ask how and now i know. Its amazing how after only 8 months i know this little person in and out. i love being a mummy but im so tired as she was up a lot of the night. Thanks for all the tips, its great to pass on all the knowledge we have to each other to help. x
PS her temp was down to 38 at the last check so still a little high but not too bad compaired to during the night. x
