Subject : Is anyone buying a breast pump?

I'm planning to breastfeed but I want to invest in a breast pump so my hubby can also enjoy feeding the baby!

I don't know whether to get an electric one or a manual one. I like the idea of an electric one as some friends told me the manual one takes ages and tired your hand out!!

I have seen one which i think is good (and has good reviews) - it's the Medula Swing Pump and cost's around £70.

Before I go ahead and order, I was wondering, if anyone have any experince with any pumps, and what advice they could give?

Thanks again for helping a clueless 1st time mum!!!

Much love, Fleeps xx

I've bought a manual one - Tommee tippee, I want to brestfeed as well but bought the breast pump as a backup plan and also so oh can do some feeds, the tommee tippee bottles are ment to be the most natural for the baby if you are planning on combination feeding, I only bought a manual one though because I intend of feeding myself 90% of the time - it might not work out that way though and i'll prob end up buying another. I have been told by someon though that it's easier to express yourself (without using a pump???) I dont know how and i'm not sure if I'd want to sit there trying but just thought I'd pass the info on.

Hi there

i had an avent manual one last time around, which did the job, however i found i didn't really enjoy the whole expressing thing much. it always seemed far too time consuming, when actually it was easier to just give little one the breast. (Thats where the electric one might be more useful by being quicker) I actually added in the occasional bottle feed around 4 weeks , so Mr Lainer didn't actually feel he was missing out. besides there are so many things they can also be a part of.

Hi,

I had an avent pump with my daughter and it worked well. I found it quicker if I fed my daughter on one and pumped on the other. Mind you I had got the hang of balancing baby, cushion and pump by then. My daughter was not receptive to the bottle though until about 3 months old. Even then it took several aborted attempts. I ended up using Nam and tommy tippee bottles. I only used the avent to freeze.
Happy choosing
Txx

I had a avent manual and although it is tricky once you get the knack it is fine. I wouldn't spend too much until you have got breast feeding established as it would be waste if you find you don't want to for whatever reason.

I've bought the Avent manual. It's a good pump. I've used the electric ones and they make me feel queezy as they suck too hard and you're not in control. With the manual, I could pump as hard, soft, fast or slow as I felt comfortable. It did not make my hand tired at all as I only used one finger on the pump handle.

Oh and the Avent one is on offer at the mo in Argos for £17.99 which includes 2 bottles, breast pads, teats and bottle seals. Well worth it:-

Hi, I have an Avent manual pump from my first time around, I had no problems but I was like Express Dairy's & could fill a bottle in 15 mins if not less. I had to change to MAM bottles though as my LO hated the Avent ones - the MAM teats are a flat-ish shape and silky soft so I would recommend them (you can use MAM teats on Avent bottles - well I did).

I would like to get an electric (duo) one this time as I hope I will be as productive & I'm very lazy so even though I can express easily from the manual I want it even easier! lol!

I would get a pump in before giving birth as I used mine to ease my breasts that went huge & rock hard & made my LO struggle to latch on sometimes so a little expressing (but not too much!) before a feed would help...you don't need to buy an expensive make, I've seen one in a local saver shop that was only £5.
You can buy pumps on eBay or sell whichever you buy if you don't get on with it, but you won't know until you've tried...I know some who get on better with electric & vice versa.
