Subject : any advice please

hello i am a first time mum to be (12 weeks today!) and have been talking about reusable nappies with my mum. she reckons me and DH should give them a go and i think she might be right.
she showed me one of my old terry towel nappies today and folded it but it looked so big! she was explaining about the nappy liners etc and how its easier to just wash the nappies instead of throwing them away and polluting the environment.
i am really keen to give this a try as i will be at home so its not as if i wont have time. i do really think that disposable nappies kill the environment and would like to think as a modern mum i can do my bit.
can anyone give me advice please or any info i can read up on?

thanks!!! xxxxxxx

Me and my mum was talking about it, and i have decided to go with re-usable naps.
The amount of money you save is amazing and its great for the enviro, and i feel it will be better for the babies private areas as well...its alot more hard work but i think it will be wortrh it...not sure of any websites...but would love to know how you get on

Hi girls! Reusable nappies are fab once you get into the hang of using them. There are actually loads of different types of reusable these days and they don't need to be any harder to put on than disposables. Best advice is to read as much as you can about them on the net and then buy some to try. I would be wary of buying a full set of any one type as diferent types and makes tend to suit different people.

The best sites I know of for advice are www.kittykins.co.uk and www.thenappylady.co.uk both of these have loads of advice to read through and stock a good range of nappys. The nappy lady also offers a personalised advice service as well, you can fill in a online questionaire and they will make recomendations for you to try.

If you have any more questions some one on here nearly always knows the answer, but be warned, cloth nappies actually get really addictive!

Thanks for the info will take a look at those websites. off shopping tomorrow so might venture into mothercare and have a look at what they have!
i really do think reusable is the way forward, i cant stand the thought of all those nappies going into a landfill to sit there for 15 years until they breakdown.
we have to recycle most things now so why not nappies?
i'm quite excited about the whole thing as i like to be a bit different! xxxx

15 years to breakdown! It's more like up to 500 years for a lot of them.

www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk & www.babykind.co.uk are also good sites in addition to the ones listed above for advice on nappies Wink

I'm just making my final choices before I buy and have come to the conclusion there is no one nappy system to suit every need. I'm getting a little bit of everything!

I have 17 motherease one size which I intend to use from around 4 months as I don't like the bulky fit on newborns. And to start me off I'm looking at Bambeasy, Diddy Diaper, Sandy's xsm, Kissaluvs, Totsbots organic/bamboo and will end up with a couple from each as I can't decide LOL!

Extra large muslins folded in half, folded again and then folded in 3 longways, put into a small wrap eg Swaddlebee ABC wrap also make a nappy in an emergency.

The best thing you can do to help yourself decide is find a nappy advisor as I've found there is only so much reading you can do before your head starts spinning!! read up what you can and then get your hands on some before buying. I have a babykind rep near me and have been picking her brains, I've met her twice now to go through whats available and it makes things much easier looking at them on the web when you've seen them in the flesh Happy

Good luck and enjoy! xxx
