Subject : Is anyone else 40+ and expecting their First Baby?

Hi Everyone. I'm 16 weeks (due 6/11) with my first at the age of 42 (I'll be 43 when it arrives). After miscarrying last year at 7 weeks I was delighted at 13 week scan to see heartbeat and baby punching the air in victory! Now I'm just worrying about the anomaly scan at 20 weeks (though hubby and I have already decided we do not want to pursue any invasive further tests). My waistband has been expanding since approx week 8. Felt nauseous but not actually sick during first 12 weeks. More recently, if I rush around in the morning I find myself wretching so have slowed the pace. Seem to be prone to heartburn in the evenings. Boobs have expanded and I think I might try some support at night now too. Thoroughly enjoying the experience. Told parents last weekend - delighted. Just need to break it to the boss. I am concerned what reaction I will get from wider work colleagues when I break the news. Is it just me? All my mags have 'young' mums. It would really help put things in perspective to hear from other first-timers who are 40+.

Hi Julie
just wanted to say many congratulations on your pregnancy. I am 42 and ttc my 3rd. I am begining to think that my time has run out as we have been trying for 11 months now but after reading your story you have given me new hope that it is possible. Try not to worry too much about future test etc. I know there is a bit more to worry about being an older mum but hopefully everything will be fine and you wil have a lovely heathy baby. A friend of my mums has just had a baby at 43 she had no tests done and her son it 100% ok. So good luck and well done. I hope i can be lucky and fall pregnant soon.
take care xxx

Hi,
I am PG with 2nd (May as well be first as my daughter is 8)!
This one is due the week before my 42nd Birthday. I was very apprehensive but have just had my 20 week scan and all was well. I have had no screening tests or anything else so just keeping fingers crossed that baby will be ok when born. Just look after yourself and enjoy!
Good Luck, Ann x

Hiya, Congratulations. I am 44 and was 43 when Alasdair was born! Had 2 miscarriages before and had pretty much given up.Loved every moment of being pregnant...so much so want to do it all again! Alasdair is now 9 months old and love every, teething moment with him. We decided on no tests, we adopted the "wait and see, what will be will be" stance and we have no regrets. He is worth everything. Good luck

Thanks Scubababe. It was good to read your post.

I had my triple blood test on Friday and am currently hoping I don't get a phone-call! (If I don't hear, I am at no higher risk). Reading your story really helps to keep me positive. Hubby and I are already saying if all goes well, would it really be too late to have a second. Obviously, I've got a long way to go yet and I just hope that all will be well with this one.

I have my 20 week scan on 20th June so that will be another milestone. Dreading it, but willing it to come around at the same time.

Just thought I'd add (you may or may not find this useful) as hubby and I did not start ttc until quite late on, we used the First Response predictor kit. It's absolutely spot on and rules out any leaving to chance. It worked both times for us and I would certainly recommend it.

Thank you for sharing your story with me.

Julie x

Hi Julie
I had my first baby at age 42 (she is now three) and I was on the pill, just missed the odd one here and there! I had the 12 week nuchal scan and the 20 week anomaly scan and she was born absolutely perfect. I am now 45 and would love a second baby. My periods are not so regular now but I live in hope and will keep trying.

hi Julie,

Hope everything is going all right for you.

I conceived for the first time at the age of 42, had C section aged 43. Now 44 and ttc for no.2. I know what you mean about worrying about scans and blood tests. I worried non-stop during pregnancy. As soon as baby was born and the midwife gave him an APGAR score of 9 (best is 10), only then did I stop worrying. It's natural to worry and you'll never stop, just don't let it take over your life. Enjoy your pregnancy. It seems like a really long 9 months but afterwards you wonder where the time went. Enjoy the warmth of the bump, the movements, the hiccups. And don't forget to talk to bump. Apparently it gets bump used to your voice (and daddy's), and helps bonding.

Good luck
xx

Hi Gina,

Many thanks for the kind words. Now at 23 weeks and all is well. Scan revealed everything is as it should be and we are having a boy! Over the last few days I have begun to feel definite kicks and cannot wait to hold this little bundle. Have some time off work in a few more weeks so we are going to start shopping (at last - cannot wait). It's so good to hear from mum's who have similar experiences to share - is your lo a girl or a boy? Julie x
