Subject : tips for feeding solids, i have a thumb sucker.... help!!
my littlest twin brianna, has this thing when she eats her solids that she sucks her thumb. she is nearl10ozs smallers than her sister. i'm not worried too much and niether is the health visitor but i just dont want her to be a problem eater. if she likes the food she will eat it no problem and wont put her thumb in her mouth that much. i have tried giving her another spoon and also letting her feed her self but she doesnt get much to eat when she feeds her self as it goes all over her and if i give her a spoon while i feed her i have to battle the spoon in her mouth to be able to give her any thing. it may take me some days 30minutes to feed her, and in the day she has three meals, breakfast lunch and dinner, so in total thats 1 and half hours i spend feeding her, not to mention the fact i have her sister to feed too.
any tips would be greatful

Hi Marsha
I think your twins are a few weeks older than Spencer. When he was on smooth food he would suck his thumb after each spoonful and it would take an age to feed him not to mention that half the mouthful of food would end up dripping round his wrist.
As we've moved onto more lumpy food and finger foods he's stopped sucking his thumb so much cos he's busy mashing the lumps with his tongue. Does she still suck her thumb when she's eating finger foods?
Sorry, I haven't really been very helpful x

finger food she is the same, she will hold it in her had that she sucks her thumb with and has the thumb in too...lol its cute but i'm starting to think what if she isnt getting enough.... i have started to make the food lumper as i was getting tired of the mess, but its even worse.......... my husband wont feed her cos of it, and its a pain cos i end up doing all the feeds on my own now cos he thinks that she is playing up for him and its put him off it.... its a shame cos my husband is great he helps out alot and he loves feeding them but ithink he finds it hard. i have to try to keep making things that i think she will like alot that she wont put her thumb in. fruit i cant go wrong she is fine with all fruit but its just the meat and veg, i have to o what she likes to get her to eat nicely
oh my girls are 8months

Harry is just the same and i've tried the same things as you, a spoon for each of us, letting him feed himself sometimes i hold his hand while i feed him and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Also, what does work for harry is if i sing 'the grand old duke of york' (with actions) or if your happy and you know it, or aeroplane noises as he's to busy laughing to think about his thumb. i do try to avoid this though as it could be quite embarrasing while we're out! x

I tend to give Kara something to play with. Sometimes its one of her bowls. She does put this in her mouth but as she is opening her mouth to put the bowl in I put the spoon in. She was going through a stage of sucking her thumb while eating and it was annoying. I just kept taking it out everytime she put it in. She sucked her thumb when she wasn't getting fed but I didn't mind that at all.

Kenny has also started stuffing his fists in his mouth in between mouthfulls. He is a fast eater and the quicker I can get the food in the better. I have to take his hand out his mouth and hold it so I can feed him. This may be the start of them getting to grips with the feeding thing and knowing food comes from hands. Iv tried giving him a spoon but he chucks it away.
