Subject : Babygrows... can someone shed some light for a novice?

Hi Ladies,

I'm expecting my first (a little boy) at the moment and am just getting to the stage of thinking about buying things. It's probably a ridiculous question, but babygrows are stumping me! What do i buy? There are short sleeved ones and long sleeved ones, and i don't know if i'm supposed to have both, or one or the other, or short sleeves are for certain times and long sleeved for others! Can you help?! Feel free to laugh at the fact that out of everything i have to think about, this is what's keeping me up at night! :-) xx

Hi. Its not a rediculous question at all. There are so many different things about. What time of year are you expecting your baby? Iv have two children the eldest born in summer and youngest in winter. I bought long sleeved for both of them. I personaly just left a vest on my eldest as it was a really hot summer and he was a warm baby.

congratulations how exciting,
well i had a winter baby and found sleepsuits were actually the best thing to begin with for day and night, if it was cold i'd put a short sleeve babygro underneath, these are also great to go under clothes or in the summer months as a tshirt under dungarees etc, long sleeve i did buy, but to be honest didn't find them of great use unless under a t-shirt instead of a cardi over a tshirt but i never replaced them when he grew. i'd also suggest a pram suit as they are great for popping over whatever clothes he wears if you need to nip out.
good luck and enjoy the shopping .

i would definately get both. the long sleeved and leg ones (i call them romper suits) are great for them to sleep in, and if it's extra cold the short sleeved vests are great for underneath them. vests are also good for putting underneath outfits for extra warmth and comfort. babies can sleep in short sleeved vests if the room is warm too. my LO lives in her vests around the house, it's so much easier having them in a once-piece rather than in trousers and top!! it's not a silly question at all. when your LO comes you'll soon figure out what he likes to be wearing or what to put on in diffrnt temperatures. happy shopping xxx

I'm due September 23rd, so i'm thinking it will be starting to grow colder, and long sleeved things would be better. The idea of putting a short sleeved one under a long sleeved one makes sense for warmth in the winter. Did you find your babies were in babygrows most of the time when they were newborns, and only went into proper little clothes when they were a bit older? xx

My lo is a week old and I have him in the long sleeved babygros/sleepsuits with a vest sleepsuit thingy underneath. My OH likes him to wear little clothes but I find them so annoying especially as it's me changing him! I think newborn babies look cutest in babygros anyway, and little clothes are nicer for when they're a bit older. xxx

Hi i think the longsleeve sleepsuits are best with a short sleeved vest under neath..i personally never used his long sleeved vests...as someone said they are good for under things such as dungerees but otherwise....I had lots of cute little outfits bought so i did use them, but in a way they are a waste of money as they grow out of them so fast and lets face it baby is only asleep most of time anyway, but i think when you have lots of little outfits you want to show them off lol...All the best for the rest of your preganacy and labour!x

I was like you, unsure of what to buy (I was due the end of August). Anyway, I had the most adorable babygros, but my little boy went mad when I put them on him. He will only wear something without feet, so they all went into the loft!!

had my little boy 30th oct last year and he was wearing shortsleeve body vest and all in one sleepsuits at night and then during the very cold bit of winter at night he was in a longsleeve vest under his sleepsuit. Daytime he was either in shortsleeve body vest under a day all in one or longsleeve t-shirt or a long sleeve vest under shortsleeve t-shirt & trousers (all in one simple clothes are great for new fragile babies) some days with no visitors he stayed in a sleepsuit!

last weeks hot spell in was in just short sleeve/leg rompers or shorts+t-shirt daytime and night was a shortsleeve vest!

oooh forgot to say and i know it will depend on the size of your baby, mine was 7lb14 and i found 0-3 stupidly large so it's worth getting a few new baby (they seemed to last 2 months for me!) i would agree with the others that sleepsuits/all in ones are the best for home and certainly the most precious looking, but outfits can be fun when out too. i also found personally when youre just starting to get used to the whole dressing a baby malarky the ones that do up from the front are a lot easier than over the head. lol

I always put a short sleeve vest on Kara and a long sleeve babygro. She was born in Sept so it was pretty cold. I think the short sleeve ones are cold looking especially for bed. They would be ok for during the day. Kara had a lot of short sleeved ones and I didn't get to wear them on her at all.
