Subject : why are babies getting bigger?

After reading a lot of posts it seems to me that the average newborn weight is on the increase, which is pretty scarey to me. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?
When i was born 22 years ago i was seen as a HUGE baby(the heaviest born in the area that summer, lol)at 9lb but these days it seems quite normal to have a 9lb+ baby.xx

I dont know if its that Zoey, the average weight is obviously lower than you would expect because over the last 10 years they have started to save babies prematurely so early and at such low birth weights it brings the average way down. Also my nan says you just didnt talk about the size of the baby you'd sqeezed out all of her 5 were 10lb plus exept for her twins who were nearly 7 lb each 3 weeks early.

Also though we eat bigger portions and worse foods I guess and as a nation we are getting bigger and fatter so I suppose its to be expected? I would love a 6lber though, not very likely though!

I don't think it's true, I think it all depends on the person. Don't think it has anything to do with weight as a lot of big women have tiny babies and vice versa. People are getting taller though, I heard that 50 years ago the average woman was 5"3 and now 5"5. Or something! So maybe that's why. I think it is down to genetics. My oh and my dad are tall and thin and I have a long thin baby. My dad was 10lb born and his brother 11lb and this was 50 years ago! xxx

I noticed that wen i had Rhys who was 7lb 12oz he was one of the lighest on the ward at that time, but also older people classed him as a BIG baby and younger people classed him as a SMALL baby. Just shows how over time peoples opinion of wat is big and small has changed. Dnt know about u but id be perfectly happy with another 7lb 12oz baby, lol. Kerry xxx (33+1)

9lb isn't all that heavy but for a twin it is huge! Lol!! (Sorry Zoey!) I think while the average baby is 7lbs the average twin more like 4lbs! Probably because they're often prem though xxx

I was born over 2 weeks late and weighed 5lb 10 oz. When I had a scan at 34 weeks bambino was 5lb 10oz so it definately dosn't take after me!!! My OH was 7lb 3oz when he was born at 1 weeks late so I am hoping bambino takes after daddy esp as OH is tall and slim!!

I was always told I was a very big baby, I was 7lbs 11 oz. So it's quite surprising to hear everyone talk of 9lbs and 10lbs even 11. However I did see the pic of the 14 lb baby born last year and I'm sorry but that baby was way too big!!! Imagine giving birth to a 1 stoner.

I have to say I prefer big babies, but then, I am biased! LOL! Gabe is so cute, and perfectly in proportion, if not thin!!

The thing I like about bigger babies mainly is they are easier to hold and dont feel as fragile. I know small bubs are just as hardy but I always feel scared holding them.

I don't think there is any pattern particularly. The average weight is about 7 1/2lbs. My OH was 3wks late and 9lbs. i was 3 days early and 5lbs 12oz but mum had some kind of problem with her placenta and me getting nutrients. Chloe when born 8 wks ago was 6lbs 6 1/2oz and 5 days early (she weighs 10lbs 13oz as of today yay!!). just so you know i am far from slim - i'm 6 stone overweight so weight doesn't necessarily make any difference. everyone is different and no way of telling, even the scans are not necessarily that acurate - guess you will have to wait and see!!

I was 9 1/2lb at birth, oh was 8 lb 10. Millie was 7lb 1oz so you can never tell! Apparantly when my great gran was born, which would have been about 100 years ago, she was 14lb!!! You would never have known as she was really tiny as an adult! One of my mums cousins was also very big, about 12lb so I am half expecting that despite measuring small for dates this lo of mine is going to be a big lad! I guess I will see on Thurs when I have the growth scan.

My brother was just over 9lb at birth and I was 7lb 6. My little boy was 7lb 3 and seemed so tiny, I can't imagine how tiny the 6lb babies are! Everyone said he looked like a little doll bless him!
