Subject : Weaning not going well
Hi girls, we're not having much luck with solid foods here.
When Paige was about 4 mths i started her on rice cereal and then started with a bit of pureed veg as well, some things she liked and some she didn't but i hadn't been pushing her to eat, just experimenting really.
I then found that she really loves mashed banana, but that's when the trouble started. After having the banana Paige started projectile vomiting, and while i'm used to a lot of sicked up milk with her reflux i was still shocked to see her gagging and spewing, and the smell almost made me sick too, lol.
I've been advised to stop all solids for now and try again closer to 6 months, which is apparantly still mostly recommended for breastfed babies. Our clinic sister thinks Paige is not ready for solids and this is her body's way of letting me know.
Is anyone else having any trouble?

well i haven't really been putting solids on zachariah yet, although we do have baby cereal and the occasional rice pudding (which i cut down as he was getting rather constipated) anyway banana was one of the first things i tried too ( it did say in books pureed fruit or rice) so thought i'd give it a go. he loved it, really gobbled it up but we had the most awful day as he appeared to be constipated and when he finaly did do the deed as such it was full of black bits (sorry if tmi) but i noticed aferwards that they say the banana has to be really ripe so i wondered if perhaps that was your problem too?
i think it probably is worth waiting if that's what you've been advised, i'm also trying to get as close to 6 months as i can before really getting into it, and so far i have to say i don't think he's in desperate need for it really. good luck really hope it all goes down better when you start up again

Ella likes her rice in the morning with a sneaky bit of pureed apple in it, but is not keen on having anything in the evening yet. Thought it was because she didn't like any of the veg I'd tried but now I think it's just the time of day. I'm going to wait for a while before introducing another meal I think

Poor Paige, sorry to hear her sickness is no better. My hv, paed and doc all said weaning would more than likely help her reflux and it has made a bit of a difference after her solids, less sick than just milk.
Gracie also was very sick off banana and you've got me thinking of a website www.babyreflux.com i think. I read ages ago that reflux babies may need to avoid certain foods...must check again!
Will check the address is right and amend it if it's not!
Hope all your girls are well x
I'm back lol! It's www.babyreflux.co.uk and under expert advice, weaning and reflux. It mentions bananas too! Hope it helps x

hi, i tried at 16 weeks a bit of baby rice with milk, wasn't bothered about it really so stopped and started again at week 20/21 but this time tried rice for couple of days and he wouldn't swallow it, tried half a rusk with milk and he gobbled it down so just did that at 6pm... then a few days ago week 22 added fruity beakie c&g with milk which he has at about 12pm - he's 23 weeks today so next week going to try some puree... friends have advised pear steamed then pureed smooth as a good first as not to strong taste and light on bellies...
i think if there not noticing the food being taken away then there prob not ready, how many weeks is your lo?
xx

Thanks for your replies girls, lots of good advice too.
Paige is about 22 weeks so i guess theres still no real rush to push her to eat more if she's not ready, but at dinner time she loves to sit in her high chair with us at the table and she gets a bit cranky that she's not getting anything, lol. I usually just give her a sipper cup of boiled water to keep her happy.
My other 2 girls were a lot easier to get onto solid foods, but maybe that was because i had more time with less kids too, lol.
I might try a rusk too, do you all make your own or buy them?

Hiya, your right not to rush or worry. My son had no interest in food atall and I weaned him at 25 weeks, I really struggled and in the end decided to stop and start again a few weeks later and he was fine (he was 30 weeks then). He'll eat anything but can gag and then throw up quite easily, so we've just taken it really slowly. I think some babies want to wean early and others are not that bothered. I would avoid giving rusks until they are a year old due to the sugar content (they don't recommend these now!). What got my son started (the second attempt!) was fruit purees quite runny, ie, pear and apple with a tiny bit of baby rice added. Organix do an excellent range of finger foods that contains no junk and my son's taken to these really well (he loves the cereal bars as they are really fruity and very soft - even though it says recommended for over 12 months - he has no problem with them!). Take care. Cori

Bren has been ok with the c&g cereals, although some days really wants it other days isn't so bothered so I don't push him. But we were having mashed potatoes with our tea the other night so I decided to put some to one side for him. I mashed it up even more with some of his milk (I put his to one side before I added anything else to the mash for us in terms of butter, salt or milk). He started off eating it ok, then pulled a few faces but was still asking for more, then he just spewed the whole lot back up! Hmmmm!
My hv said anything that has suitable from 4 months is ok to give them so I wouldn't worry too much about the rusks. You can get sugar free ones if you are worried about the sugar content.

My husband has been alergic to banana since he was a baby. It started out with being sick after eating it. Then his mum found he was also sick whenever he ate yogurts or jars of baby food with banana in. If they didn't have banana, he was fine. I'm going to be very cautious when I start giving Charlotte banana just in case she takes after her daddy! The only other thing he's allergic to is cauliflower - don't know if there's a connection.
