Subject : Shift work and child care what can I do?

Hi all

Im due to return to work in July, my lo will be 81/2 months when i return to work. I qualifed as a nurse in September 2006 and only got a part-time contract due to shortage of funds and places so I do 2 12 hour shifts a week. My plans for childcare is for my mum to have Ellie one day and my mother in law to have her the other day. However, both my mum and MIL work (part-time) so I am limited to when I can work as my hubby works full time. I was hoping that I could request to work permant Mondays and Fridays, although I didn't know if I could legally do this and be granted it. Also after being back for a month or so I was thinking of changing to doing permanent nights as my mil who was a health care assistant used to do nights when my hubby was small and his brother and sister as she said that the lo's don't miss you and it's easier for childcare.

What do the people who are nurses or do shift work think about permanent nights? Does anyone know if I am able to request to set days or nights and get them????

Thanks in advance, Gem.xx

hi,i worked 34 hours a wk before i had lennon i was contracted for hours not days, but before i went back to work i requested that i did not want to work the weekends, that i couldnt work early morning as we start at 5.30am and that i had my rota 2 weeks in advance

if you go onto the direct gov website it can give you help about how to go about asking your work for certain hours and days,as you now have a baby they have the right to seriously consider what you have asked for and if they refuse it they have to explain why,i would say it best you look at the direct gov webite first tho,it helped me out aswell as a lawyer coz my work were being difficult!!!! i wouldnt see why they would have a problem with you doing nights tho

hope i've helped lisa

Hi there, yes it is possible, but it will be very difficult on you. I work part time. I am at home in the morning and work in the evening. I have a nanny come in every evening. I am into a nanny share with a family close by. This is a good arrangement and works for me. I get to look after my baby in the morning as well as help with the finances. Visit Nanny Share and see if it can help you in any way.
