Subject : Anybody Wanting A Section

Hi Girls,
I was just wondering if there are any mum-2-b's out there who have had a section and want one this time round. I only ask because I was certain that I didnt want another section this time and wanted a natural birth. However as my due date is getting closer im beginning to wonder wat i actually want, im scare that if i go for a natural birth ill end up having another horrible experiencing which will result in an emergency section anyway. This is my second (and probably) last baby so i wud like to experience natural child birth but im so scared this time round and just wondering if an elective section wud be the better option. Any thoughts? Kerry (27+6) xxxx

Hi, I was 100% sure when i found out I was pregnant that I didnt want another section and wanted to try for a vbac. Now as the time is getting closer I'm not sure. I keep thinking that what happened last time will happen again, (emergency section under ga due to baby getting distressed) and now since i have seen my consultant and he mentioned about rupturing (sp) during labour that has made me even worse than i was before. So i'm really unsure now what i want.I keep telling my oh i want a section but he's not sure how ill cope with a newborn and a 13 month old when i get home.

Hello Kerry and Hayley.

I had a section last september and was surprised to discover I was pregnant so soon afterwards. My GP has warned me that I hadn't really had much time to recover from the section so there is a good chance that I will not be allowed to go to term and will have to have another section. The more I think about it the more frustrated and anxious I feel about not knowing. I'm seeing a consultant next week, I'll be 20 weeks then and I think I'll have to explain how I feel about it. I'd rather say now that I want an elective and be given a date as my pregnancy develops.

My baby is due 3rd Sept and my lo's first birthday is 9th Sept. If I have a section before 'time' then there is a good chance they will be in the same year group at school!

My husband has expressed the same concerns about coping with a little one and a newborn while I'm recovering from a section. At least if we are given a specfic date he can book some time off work, then my mum and sister will probably do the same. I'm sure my mother-in-law would too if I asked.

Does anyone have any idea if an elective is easier to recover from than an emergency section? I had some nasty bruising following my emergency section that were difficult not to have a good swear about! Do you think an elective would be better, ie less bruising, as it shouldn't be so 'rushed'?

All the best ladies, Denise xxx (19 weeks today)

From what iv heard from people who have had an elective section, recovery seems to be a little easier. I think this is because mummies aren't as exausted or had as much drama going on than people who have had an emergency. This is why i cnt decide wat i want, if i go natural and then have to go thru everything i went thru last time i dnt think i cud cope, however with an elective im assuming its alot more civilised and my mind and body will have time to prepare itself. So confused,,, either way ill be seeing the consultant on 9th June wen ill be 36wks and the final decision will be made then. xxx

My sil had had 2 sections and she said for her the second time around was easier.
((I have posted some info on el-pinko's post for you, not sure if it will help?))
Have you thought about an epidural if you want a vbac? then everything is in place should anything go wrong and a section is needed?

i had an emergency c section 1 st time, so when i have another ive said i would like an elective c section! i had such a nightmare the first time i would dread it happening again. but also going back to when i was in hospital, i saw my mw, who was doing a shift there she came over to talk and when i told her of my probs she didnt seem suprised at all, almost like she didnt expect i wouldnt deliver naturally (im only 4' 10"). since then i discussed this with hv and she said obv wait untill you are pregnant to make a decision, however what size shoe are you??????? what?? im a 4. 'oh yes' she said!!! weird.
i do agree with kerrymc, that your recovery might be better as you wouldnt have been throught a 36hr labour first (like me), and with already having children, it might be better to be able to organise c/care etc.

Hiya,

I’m 24 weeks pregnant with my second child, had an emergency c-section 1st time and definitely want another one this time. However, I’m finding it really hard to get backed by the consultant. The first time around, I was in labour for 38 hours and only ever dilated to 5cm, for the first 28 hours I wasn’t even allowed on the labour ward as had only dilated to 2 cm (contractions were every couple of minutes though) so had no pain relief available, it was pure hell and I’m absolutely terrified of going through that again!

Two midwives have recommended I have a c-section this time but the consultant will not have it, I have another meeting with him this Friday to try and fight my case, I ended up in tears last time and he did then say that they wouldn’t do anything against my will and that it is me who will make the final decision – is this right though??

As others have mentioned, I think it will be far less stressful to have a section 2nd time around as you have a date to plan for and can arrange a good network of people to support you and look after other children, I’m just hoping I’ll have a more positive meeting this week!

Sounds awful enfys, hope ur meeting goes well. Im 29wks and have only had one discussion about a section and that was at my booking in appt at 8wks. Think my hospital are just in the mind set that i will be having another section. Iv have got to go see a consultant wen im 36wks who will assess the babies position and between us then a decision will be made. Although id love to have a set date and be more prepared this time round part of me is still wanting to go natural. I suppose only time will tell and im gona try not to think about it between now and then because I just keep going round in circles in my head. Gud Luck, Kerry xxx

Well I had my meeting with the consultant this morning, a different consultant this time and it went really well! They've agreed to book me in for a section 1st Aug when I'm 39 wks and if I go naturally before then, I've agreed to give it a go on the condition that if I don't dilate at least 1cm per hr, they will stop at 6 hours and give me a section anyway. I'm perfectly happy with this and so relieved!! Must admit though, I am secretly hoping baby will stay put until 1st Aug!!

I guess if I do go naturally I've got the best of both worlds, I can try natural birth but with the knowledge that if it isn't going to plan, there is a back up plan in place and I won't be left like last time!

Hope everyone else gets the outcome they want, best of luck to you all!

Hi,
I have been reading this forum with great interest. Enfys I am so happy to hear the new consultant has agreed you get your section. How dare they not let you go with you wishes.

I am 30+3 and I too had a 36 hours labour first time round (my own fault as I insisted on a natural birth). Then my kidneys almost gave up and ended up having an emergency cs. I too was sure this time (second and last baby) that I would still opt for natural and when the consultant asked my wishes at 16 weeks I told him that I wanted it naturally, he seemed surprised, but happy with my decision.

As time goes on and I get closer I am now almost definite that I have changed my mind. I am not allowed past 39 weeks because I am diabetic and apparently they can't induce you after a cs so the baby needs to come on it's own. The chances of this happening are very small and I am now thinking would it not be better to just get a date on the calendar. I can then make sure my mother in law is not working when I need my 4 year old looked after and also I spoke to my sister the other day and she told me some pretty horrible things about her "baggy *****". I am quite happy with mine as it is so think the section is the answer. I also have 4 dates to visit my daughters school and two of them fall between 38-40 weeks. At least if I have the cs I can let the school know now that I can't attend and try to re-arrange.

I am seeing the consultant in 2 weeks so will let you know what the outcome is.

Love Helen and bluebump X

Hi enfys, it sounds like you have the best option there. All the best with it x x x

Hi Helen, have you met the consultant yet? How did it go? x x x

How is everyone else doing with their pregnancies and decision re c-section? I'm still up in the air but I don't see the consultant until early august so I have plenty of time to think it through further.

All the best ladies, Denise xxx

Just a little bit of advise ladies. I had an emergency section with my first and then my second was a section too although she is classed as elective how i dont know because i wnt for me 37week appointment and was told she was loosing weight and needed deliverying immediatly. I was more than happy to go along with section that time too. But i am now pregnant with my 3rd and have had such a fight on my hand to be able to have a natural birth. I wont bore you in here with details see my post if you want to know but I would make sure you think long and hard as until i managed to star labour myself last night before my section tomorrow I had no chance of being allowed to try one and as this I plan on being our final child I would have felt 100% cheated if I didnt experience labour at all. Still not sure if I will get fully establihed but we will see.

hiya.i had an emergancy section with my DD last september, it wasn't the best experience however i am pregnant again and am due on 14th september and have decided i defo want another section, the thought of tryin a VBAC and then having a section anyway is too miserable for me to bear! i have been told there is a 60% chance of a normal delivery going fine but am still not wanting to take the risk. i do wonder sometimes how i will cope after my section with a new born and a 1 year old but know i will have alot of support from my BF so i am quite happy and will be sticking to my decision to have section numer 2 :)

Well ladies, im having a sweep on 23rd June so hopefully a VBAC is on the cards for me. However if at this sweep my cervix isnt favourable and baby has started to engage then they will advise that i have another section. Either way im happy now im just a little tired of been pregnant and want this baby to makes its entrance into the world. Kerry xxx

I had an emergency section in Nov 2003 as my daughter was coming out forehead first. I laboured right till the end and they only realised when I had been pushing for an hour and managed to get her stuck in my pelvis. My epidural had only half worked so when they topped me up with the spinal I part felt the section and it took them a while to get her out. I am fairly scared about the this little one who is due on 4th however have opted for a natural as I felt so cheated the first time around. I am worried though as obviously rupturing is so dangerous but my doctors seem really positive that all will go well and at the slightest sign of something not being right I will have a section. I've also been told in no way will I be induced or given any type of drug to strengthen contractions so fingers crossed it all goes well. I hope everyone else gets the birth they are hoping for too

Karina81 i was in the same sit as you,i had emergency section for foetal distress in feb 06. My epidural hadnt worked properly however this wasnt realised until they started surgery so was immediately switched to general anaesthetic. I felt cheated and wasnt treated very well but i went on to have a successful natural birth in august last year. You'll be monitored really closely so any problems will be picked up before they become serious so try not to worry (i know its impossible, i was sh****** myself.). Good luck xxx

Well ladies, i ended up having an elective section on 26th June, i must say it was sooo different from the emergency one i had with my son in Aug 2006. Everything was so much calmer and my recovery has been great (came home after two days). Im so glad i ended up have the section now coz Sophie was delivered one week early and weighed 8lb 14oz so if i had gone to term or over i dnt think i wud have been able to deliver her naturally and prob wud have ended up with an emergency section anyway. Also her head circumfrance was 2cm bigger than my son and if i cudnt get him out i wud have had no chance with her. Hope everyone is getting there with their VBAC decisions i personally wanted VBAC sooo much, but im so glad i had an elective now. Gud luck girls, Kerry and Sophie xxxx

Hi Kerry,
I am glad it went well for you and Sophie and that you only had to stay in hospital 2 days.
I hope you are recovering well?
