Subject : Quantity of food

Max is a realtidler, born on the 2nd centile and now following the 9th,I know this is just his natural size-he's perfectly proportioned but I can't help worrying especially as he's not a big eater,he'll justdecide he doesn't want to eat for a couple of days then suddenly start again,it's very stressful although i try not to show it-it's just frustrating when you've cooked lovely meals and have to throwthem away, anyway,I've not really any idea how much food a 7month old should be eating,an example of a good day;table spoon of dry porridge mixed with 60ml milk and some fruit purée,one finger wholemeal toast with butter, lunch would be scrambled egg with cheese and toms made with one egg-he'd eat half, half a pear, half an organix rusk mid afternoon, tea would be a cocktail sausage size of meat, one broccloi florette, one baby corn, one green bean,at a real push he'd have a couple of teaspoons of Greek yoghurt for pudding.

Does that sound about right?xx

hi pixiebob. austin's diddy one too, altho he was born just below the 25th, dropped down to just above the sceond but now has sttled back on the 9th. he also goes thru phases of being extremely stubborn and basically refusing anything i offer him, even finger foods, but then a few days later he wolfing down everything. he eats pretty much same amount of food as max. typical day wld be bfast- half a weetabix mashed with a smal banana possibly half a slice of toast too but to be fair he only eats about half that as rest is on the floor lol, lunch- he'll have about half a tub (u know the baby bowls u can by in asda) so about 15 teaspoons of something i've ready prepared and got out the freezer (cottage pie, stew casserole etc etc) he'll only eat half this usualy tho, then some rice cake, carrot stiks and some fruit fingers. dinner is pretty much the same sort of thing as lunch, but will sometimes have half a yoghurt after too. i have been thinking lately tho about changing his lunch to sandwiches or something sililar but not sure what really.

tbh i think what we're giving him is about right, especially given he is a little'un and if he's happy, healthy and putting on weight then jsut follow his appetite really. althio i do panic sometimes too, and yes i get frustrated, especially when he's wolfed down something one day then next time he has the same he'll refuse it and it all goes in the bin. sometimes tho, he's refusing me, but if oh goes to sit with him he starts eating again, little monkey. xx

Thanks siany, you've put my mind at ease-not that icould make him eat any more but it's good to know he's eating a reasonable amount,I think I need to just relax on the days he doesn't eat instead of trying loads of different food and getting in a tis,I wouldn't mind if he didn't fancy lunch or something but he literally doesn't eat a bite all day!

For lunch,I do things like;sandwiches, mini pizzas(chopped tomato, cheese, mushrooms on toast),tuna toasties, scambled egg, omlette with gratted corgette, macaroni cheese with finely chopped broccoli(I just microwave the brocolli in the microwave for 2mins),cracker breads with philidelphia,a selection of finger foods, breadsticks dipped in houmous, tinned salmon mixed with cream cheese on toast fingers xx

I think all of our March babes are tiddlers! Daisy-Mae is also there - just over the 9th centile now..

I was thinking that she was being a right pig and eating loads, until I read what your boys eat, so I would say you don't have anything to worry about! :-)

Daisy eats nothing from a spoon now - little madam! She will ONLY feed herself! Arghhhhhhh! Consequently, nothing really goes in.. I've spoken to my HV about this more times than I can remember who just keeps telling me not to drop her milk down too much - easier said that done as she dropped her 11am feed by herself and is currently fighting with me to drop either the 7am or 3pm feed depending on the day!!!

I think that Max is eating well there Pixie, I wouldn't worry too much..

Now I'm off to stress about my independent little madam... :-)

C xx

Sandwiches r easiest for max to handlewith sticky stuff inside so anything mixed with a bit ofcream cheese really!I put it in the little blender so it's smooth and spreads well-tuna,salmon,chicken,cucumber,just wiz it all up,I also roll the bread with a heavy mug so it's dead thin,2slices of bread are too thick for him to get him chops around!xx

She's doing really well at nursery, thanks pixiebob.

To be honest, I actually think it's really helping her development. She's extremely independent - feeds herself, crawls around to get things and is very physically strong... We sat her on a trike in Mothercare yesterday made for 10+ months and she sat without the harness done up beautifully and my hubby drove her around in it for about 20 minutes! The girls that work there were shocked at her, based on her tinyness and the length of her legs (VERY long!).

I'm sure that since she went to nursery, all of this has dramatically improved! Plus, you'll be surprised at how much you enjoy being back at work, and having a little bit of you back, I think!!!

Don't dread it, just enjoy your time with him now - and get prepared! It's a busy time when you are back at work!!

I find food so confusing!!! I have the opposite. My Ds is in the shaded area at the top of the chart for weight and height. I have tried to cut him to three milks but he wakes in the night so he is on 4 milks of 7oz plus porridge with fruit puree, a mixed vegtable mix, yogart and then for supper he has lentils or a meat based dish with vegtables or cheese with fruit. His portions equate to about 2 'plum' pouches (200g) per meal. I cook everything myself and use pouches if I am out. I am back at work and find it hard to get more of a variety into him. I wish I had done the BLW but he needed food at 17 weeks so that was not possible. I do try and ensure he gets given finger foods during the day e.g rice cakes, carrot sticks etc.
I just think I have the 'guilts' about being back at work. Its taking me weeks to feel more settled! i think I will really try and get his diet more varied. He just loves fruit and veg though!!

What type of bread do you give your lo's? Granary brings my ds out in a rash on his face. Do you think its a wheat intolerance?

Also, I only give water and milk as drinks does anyone else give different things e.g fennel tea?

Thanks ;)
x

That's great that daisys doing so well,I promise I'll try not to worry-just can't help myself!!

Littlep-sounds like you Los diet is great, keep doing what your doing,we started doing blw but I couldn't sit back and watch max 'playing'with his food at every meal when he's so small so we do a mix,I'll spoon feed him one meal a day,let him feed himself yoghurt as he never eats much of it anyway so he can have fun getting messy and holding the spoon and then he does all his finger foods himself.

I'm not sure about the wheat intolerance, max gets a rash on his face when he eats tomatos and pineapple but I think that's the acid.is his tummy ok after it?i give max wholemeal xx

little p, it cld be wheat intolerance, but if that was so then it wld also happen with pasta etc to, is it possible its the nuts and/or seeds in the bread that are causing it? austin has granary/ seeds and oats stuff the whole grain stuff (altho not usre he's allowed nuts aand seeds at the mo or if i shld be waiting cos he's already milk intolerant, but then he's been having it for a month now so probably not an issue.

we tried sanwhiches today at lunch he had - 4 squares of cheese spread sandwhich, a cherry tomato (chopped in 4) couple of cucmber sticks, some organix 'crips' things and a small apple, and he ate it so nicely, was so easy to, no fuss just sat there happy as larry muncing away, it was great, definately gonna stick to that sort of thing at lunch time now, think cos we didn't have a 'fihght' at lunch it rubbed off at dinner and he actually let me feed him his tea, was fantastic! xx

Ah that's great siany!I give max a spatula to hold when I'm feeding him-sounds weird but it works-he just wants something to occupy his hands so instead of grabbing the spoon and launching to across the room he plays with his spatula!xx

lol, a spatula? lol. i give austin a baby sppon sometimes or his water but sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. he's a little monkey, if he doesn't want it, he fake coughs! or pretends to be tired! he'll do this little cough, right as i get the sppon by his mouth, but before its in, so i know he's not gagging, if he likes it he stops the cough, if he doesn't want it he'll do it everytime i put the sppon near him! or he'll rub his eyes and lay his head to the side but the few times i fell for it and got him out, he was full of beans again so i know he's faking lol! xx

Littlep - my dd is more like your ds...she is a gannet (sp!). She is on the 50% percentile for weight, but on 91st for height. She has a porridge or weatabix with a boots frozen baby food tray portion of fruit and then toast with peanut butter normally for breakfast. For lunch she has three portions of the boots tray or about 150-200g of the organix or some such thing (if we are out). I always give her meat or fish at lunch, or lentils (depending on what I've got in the freezer), and then a yogart pot or a fruit pot. For dinner she has a mix of vegetables with pasta/potato (same portion size), and then a yogart or fruit pot, or a finger food banana or red pepper (she adores red peppers) or some such thing.

She eats a lot less when it is finger foods, but I'm trying to make her other food much more lumpy because I think she can manage it and it is good for her!

She also won't eat unless she has something to play with (a spoon, or bowl, or lid or anything like that). She gets bored!

Freya is generally on three milk feeds but she will sometimes ask (forcefully) for one in the morning. She likes her breastfeeds, but they don't seem to interfer with solids. Although she is one of the only babies in the NCT group who are gaining weight faster than the percentile line, most are dropping down!!!

Emma's a gannet too!! Thanks to all the meds she's on she's found her appetite the last few weeks.

For breakfast she has 3/4 a weetabix, and either a fruit pot or 3/4 slice of toast. For lunch she has a 10month age jar of food, or the equivalent amount if homemade, then a fruit pot or mashed avacado or banana. At 2.30 she has a yoghurt and a whole piece of fruit, and for the tea the same amount as lunch!! She only has 2 milk feeds due to her reflux, but some days it feels as if all she does is eat!!

i seems to be under feeding hollie going on what your lot have. hollie has only just turned 7 months old and we didnt start weaning till the day she turned 6 monyhs old. she was doind 'well' but then had a tummy bug and stopped eating. so now she has either a mash banana for breakfast or two table spoons of readybreak with some fruit pruee and milk and sometimes its a struggle to get that in her. she's not on lunch yet, just bottles and for tea its homemaid purees, we've just started added meat so tonight she had an icecube of pumpkin, leek and chicken mush and we had to fight to get half of that in her. then a ypgurt and 2 cunks of melon.
she's a biggy, was born on the 50th centil then went up to the 99th then dropped to the 98th when she was ill but she is off the chart for her height! people think shes about 10 months old

i still feel weird posting in here as hollie ended up being an april baby. feel like an imposter!

Of course you're not an imposter beccie-I miss your posts! Max had a very slow start too,he just didn't like anything fed to him on a spoon so I just did finger foods to begin with and gradually he got used to spoon feeding-very backwards but max doesn't seem to like doing anything the straightforward way!!xx
