Subject : 'Sweep' - Any thoughts/opinions?
Hi Ladies,
I am 40+0 on Tuesday and my midwife has said I can meet her at a local clinic on Tuesday lunchtime for a sweep and am unsure what to do. I wonder what are your experiences of this; did it bring on labour, leave you with irregular contractions for days, is it worth doing etc?
Any thoughts would be greatfully recieved.

Sorry I had a few and they did nothing for me. Though neither did the pessary gels as baby didn't properly engage so nothing would've worked for me in hindsight. That said they seem to get things going for a lot of other people I know. It's only a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds so I'd recommend giving it a shot.
best of luck x

HI,
I had a sweep with my 2nd. I was due to be induced at 37 weeks/ The day before I went to see my consultant and he performed a sweep. Nothing happened. The next morning I had a good shower and squirted a load of shower gel onto my hand and started to clean my lady garden. I wanted to make sure it was all clean since I was going to have a few people staring at it over the next few hours. The shower gel lasted for ages and ages. When I looked at my hand I realised it was not shower gel at all but a huge jelly fish like show... gross!!!!!!!!!!!
With my 4th I had a sweep at 40 plus 2. I bled a lot afterwards and had on and off pains the rest of the day. I woke at 4.20am with immense pain in my right side. I thought I was going to be ill with the trots. Long story short, basically, I was in labour and my son was born at 7.18am! So, that sweep probably helped????
It is worth a shot and if your baby is engaged and your cervix is favourable then I am sure it will kick start things!
good luck

I had 3..........
First one I was 39 weeks (was too early - I lost my plug but it was too early)
Second one 40 weeks (different doctor who hardly swept at all....I think it would of worked if been first doctor)
40+5 I had another sweep at 10am - waters broke at 6pm and baby born 34 hours later
Good luck xx

hi, i was booked for one at 40+1 but when the mw turned up she said i wasn't over enough, but then sent me to dau for bp, the next day i was given a sweep, lost my plug and felt a bit crampy, but nothing happened, following day i was induced, which didn't work for me either. i hear lots of women on here who have very effective sweeps, so i think its a bit hit an dmiss really. depends on how engaged baby is, how soft ur plug is already etc, think it basically just tips it over the edge if ur on brink of labour but otherwise wont do anything

I didnt have a sweep with my first as the midwife wouldnt do one at 40 weeks, but i persuaded her to have a look by telling her i thought something was happening and the poking around did the trick. Had a show that night and went into labour the next day.
I think the rules changed and they will do it now at 40 weeks so if i make it that far i will DEF ask for one. I would imagine that a bit of rumpy pumpy would do the same job
