Subject : I've been sent a swine flu invite...

Ok yesterday got a text asking me to book my appt for the swine flu jab, but after reading info i still don't know what to do. The company who make the jab is a company my OH used to work for i wished he still did so i could get better info lol.

Just wondering if any of you have been invited yet for the jab and what your going to do???

Yes I have been invited this week too. I am still undecided.... Part of me says no way, part of me says I really should. I was going to say no until I saw that lady in the news last week. 35 weeks pregnant and died after contracting swine flu and then Pneumonia, turned it back around for me again.....

I completley understand what you mean about the pneumonia mummygriff but the woman died of that not swine flu, so technically, if someone just contracted pneumonia now, theyd have the same chances.

I was at my antenatal class the other day and the midwives told us the jab is for US not the baby. She said that the baby will not be affected by swine flu even if we contract it, but the things we could catch i.e high fever could effect the baby. What I'm finding really hard to weigh up is that I could have a high fever, catch pnemonia ect myself without swine flu so I see it as a bit pointless!

I also asked about whether or not the baby is protected for the first six months but the midwifes said this is only the case if you breastfeed as the baby loses your antibodies after the first few weeks to month after birth which is why we are encouraged to top them up wih breastmilk so if your baby doesnt latch on, you've had the jab for nothing.

I did say that I would have no issues having the jab AFTER birth as my main concern is how the jab effects an unborn baby and then I could 'top up' my babies immunities through my breastmilk but the NHS do not consider new mums as high priority!!!! oooooooooh myyyy goooood sooo confusing!

No public transport for me im afraid haha x

i got told that swine flu was dangerous to baby if i contracted it - was told more dangerous then the jab. was undecided for ages then husband's nana got it - we popped in to see her for a few mins cos we didnt know she was ill. left after 5 mins. she was confirmed day after and later that day husband started feeling ill, doctor came out and confirmed he had it. felt i had no choice but to get it but had it tuesday night and am only just feeling better know. arm has stopped killing today. baby didnt move much tuesday night, wed, thu but has been kicking more and more today. hope i haven't come this far and screwed everything up by having the jab...

oh sweety I didnt mean to make anyone anxious. My circumstances are completley different to yours. if my OH had it then ofcourse I would get it straight away! I just think that because I am not in the 'firing line' of catching it I have the luxury of himming and hawing over it. You did the right thing babes x

Hi everyone,

I just thought i'd let you all know that I had the jab on Thursday afternoon. My arm feels like it has been punched by Mike Tyson but i think it's a little price to pay.

I was so against getting the jab until the local news broke where i live that a mother to a 2 day old baby contracted swine flu - she probably got it because her immune system was so low after being pregnant and giving birth. ANyway she has been transferred to England where she is on a life support machine and this swayed me. I couldn;t bare the thought of leaving my baby without me even if it was only fpr a few days!!

I was told by the nurse giving the jab that the baby would have up to six months immunisation from me getting the injection. If i was earlier on in the development stages of pregnany I may have had more reservations about getting it but all the development is done by this stage and I figure if anything adverse was to go wrong because of the injection they could deliver my baby without too many complications as we are so close to term.

As my father in law said i may not know the consequences of getting the injection but i can be sure of what the consequences would be if i didn't and got swine flu.

My cousin who is 24 weeks was told by her GP that if she got swine flu the likelihood would be pneumonia or worse and then her baby would be in severe difficulties.

I know everyone has to make their own decision but i just wanted to explain why i made the choice i did..

I got asked by my midwife if I wanted it. I said no. I have not even taken paracetamol during the pregnancy just in case...I am one of those people who thinks of a million what ifs... before doing anything. I think it is entirely up to the individual. I personally feel that I would have liked the jab to be tested more thoroughly and over a longer period before offering it to pregnant women. However I am aware that I am taking a risk. I hope that being a primary teacher for a number of years has strengthened my immune system a bit? Anyway with only 15 days left to work and only 34 days until my due date I am hoping I have made the right decision. xx

well - just discussed with GP today and no closer to making decision. I can't have it for another week or so as still getting over last bits of chest infection, so by the time I do have it I'll only be a couple of weeks away from my due date. He couldn't advise me to have it or not - have to make decision myself - he did imply I'd have enough to worry about over next 4 weeks other than whether to have jab or not but I am now totally confused...!! He also said they only have 500 and these may run out fairly quickly and wouldn;t be getting any more at the moment. argghhhh S XX

I also saw my gp this morning. He said the decision was mine but he advised to have the injection. He said that baby is immune whilst insde and if BF some of the antibodies will be being passed on. He agreed that i'm more likely to catch swine flu in hospital than anywhere else and also said that my immune system is only going to get lower and lower especially after the birth when i would be more suseptable to swine flu. I'm still not 100% on what to do, have MW appt at hospital on Thursday so also going to get there advice and make desicion that day. At the moment i'm sawying more towards getting the vaccine and also for my elder son.

Hi all,

Just to let you know that I'm booked in for mine this Thursday afternoon. My midwife told me that protection DOES pass on to the baby through the placenta, and as swine flu is so risky to new borns, I didn't think twice really.

Plus apparantly the risks to ME at this stage is about 4 or 5 times waht it is to a normal person because of my decreased lung size (baby in the way!).

So I'm going for it, and am very happy with my choice. Might regret it when my arms aches so much over the weekend though!! lol

Hello all,

Just to let you know that I had mine yesterday afternoon. Arm feels a bit achy around the area today, but all good! They asked me loads of questions about current medication, allergies, etc, and had to wait for 20 mins after before being allowed to leave the surgery.

Such a relief that it's done now. :)

I received my invitation this morning and I must say I'm in such a dilema, have no idea what to do for the best! Honestly, I hoped that they wouldn't get around to me before I had the baby, then the decision wouldn't have had to be made. Don't have long to think about it as the surgeries are next week.

I'm finding this the toughest thing ever! Would love to hear other peoples views, reactions, decisions and what swayed it for them, either way xx

Hi

I came home from work today and I also received a letter for the SWJ. I was initiallly against it but after discussing it with my other half I have decided to have it. Reasons being mainly immune system being low after the birth, the last thing I need is to be ill after the birth and all my breast feeding plans to go down the drain. My Auntie is a midwife so I am going to ask her advise and go from there. They have booked me in for next Saturday.

Hi Ladies

I had my 36 week midwife appointment at my hospital today and she asked me about the jab. I got a call from my docs asking me to go in for it and i told the midwife about my concerns like many of you (i was against the jab). I told her I was mre concerened about the baby seeing as the vaccine hasnt been around for long. She told me every woman that she has seen has had the same concerns. She also strongly recommends that we take it as we are more likely to catch it in our 3rd trimester. She also told me that there is a pregnant lady upstairs in intesnsive care with swine flu. That made up my mind to have the jab!

She also said that it is like the seasonal flu jab that is given to pregnant every year without any effects. She said that it is to protect us as if we didnt have the jab and caught swine flu, it could cause breathing problems which would result in the baby being effected.

They gave me an nhs booklet about swine flu to read and was told to search the NHS website for information and not any other website do to their conflicting advice.

Hope this helps

Thought you might all find this useful. We asked yesterday at antenatal with the NCT and she said she couldn't tell us to or tell us not to but to look at all the info on here and make our own decisions.

I am having my jab tomorrow because I am far enough along now that if anything happened baby would stand a good chance if born anyway.
