Subject : bonfire night?

Do u think a 22 months old is too young to be taken for fireworks? It is 10 minutes from our house and it would seriously mess up bedtime as no bath and bed 2 hours later, but I dont really think that would matter as lo would jump at the chance to stay up late.I really want to go as for me it would be the first time out after 6 pm since lo was born,I kid u not.Just not sure if she would enjoy it,got scared, etc.I ve never been before(not British) so dont really know what to expect. Thanks

Hi
With regards to bedtime etc, i think it can be a good thing to get them used to sometimes not being stuck to a routine as it enables you to do a lot more things without having to worry what lo will be like. I recently went to Weymouth with lo and she is normally in bed by 6pm but she was staying up until 10pm lol, she was fine though and atleast i know she can cope with it if i have to ever do it again.

With fireworks its totally down to how you feel your lo will cope with the noise/atmosphere etc. I personally dont really enjoy big displays and prefer home events if all safetly done and you then have the choice to go inside if lo doesnt like them xx

i agree with 2aries that sometimes you have to step away from the routine . My lo is poorly so i wont be taking her out in the cold but we ve had a few displays on already round here and she seems to have been ok with the noise. what i will say though is it was divalli or some other festival excuse my ignorance few weeks ago and it was like a war zone round here i struggled to get my lo to sleep at her ususal time anyway as it was so noisy x

Hello! We took our 22mth old dd to our village fireworks night last saturday! I was slightly nervous, as I wasn't sure how she would react, but she LOVED it. She was fascinated by the fireworks!

Hubby took her in the baby rucksack thing on his back, and she was just gazing up at them the whole time. She had her 2 big brothers with her, and she was fine!

However, I will add that I remember my little sister being petrified of fireworks when she was aged 1, 2 and 3yrs old, so I guess you need to be ready for them being scared and if they are make a quick exit!!

I suppose every child will be different.I wont be taking Benjamin this year, hes 2 and abit....we took him to Blackpool and there was a firework display on while we were there and he hated it so much we had to leave!!! some of my neighbours have been letting fireworks off and I thought showing him through the window would be ok,but he still ran off crying..so I wont bother going out this year. That said couldnt go to a Halloween Party either as He was scared of all the masks and things in Tescos.....I think I have a wuss lol x

I think the noise can sometimes be a bit overwhelming for toddlers. We're going to my mum's on saturday night and I managed to buy some fireworks which apparently don't make a bang! So we will be going there and keeping the girls up later than usual. I think every now and then it's fine to change the routine for special events like bonfire night, Christmas etc.

If you decide to go then I hope you all enjoy it and let us know how your lo got on.

its funny how they differ. Shea is 2 and a bit and we took him to a Village Halloween street party where they lit the street with hundreds of pumpkins and all the houses were decorated and everyone was dressed up and HE LOVED IT!! kept screaming Arrgghh!! at all the scary costumes but laughing with it, he wasn't scared at all!!

Bonfire night last night was a different matter. There weren't any organised dispays on near us so thought i'd get him wrapped up adn go for a walk to see the neighbours displays going off. he was fascinated with the bangs, not over impressed with the colours in the sky and kept saying "lets go home, dark"!!! He didn't like being out in the dark!!!!
was planning on taking him to organised display on sat but now reconsidering if he doesn't like being out in the dark!!

odd seeing as he sleeps no problem in a pitch black room

weird child!! xx

i think it def depends on the child!! hubby hates fireworks (has very sensitive hearing and hates things like balloons as well cos of the bangs etc ) so he is not keen for her to experience it!! I love them and want to take her so a battle or wills ensues!!

i think like others have said a break in routine is good so you can prove how they react to it and that you can be more flexible than you think.

i would just be prepared to go home if they don't like it, so personally until i was sure she liked them i wouldn't go to a big 'do' especially if tickets etc to be bought or could be a complete waste of money!!

Glad you had a good time. We had a few fireworks in the garden this evening (oh was working yesterday) and Barney (16 months) absolutely hated them. Even watching through the window his bottom lip was trembling, the quiet ones weren't so bad but he really hated the rockets so we watched ITNG instead while oh and Milie did the fireworks!!
