Subject : FAO those who use ice cube trays for weaning....

Sorry to any1 whos already answered my Q on another post...but i went right in and bought the food pots, and freeze lailas meals in those, she doesnt always manage them all as theyre quite big...may switch to trays, which ones do u use, do u buy then with covers?? (as iv read u need covers?? where do u labe them so u know whats in wot? and how many cubes usualy count as a meal for ur LOs?? sometimes Laila eats a hole potfull of what i make her (dont want to be overfeeding her) other times just a few mouthfulls?
Also does any1 know when LOs should be eating a hole pot full?? before i go buying the trays?? or is it just trial and error? as i say Laila can sometimes eat loads and other times not so much?
Hope this post makes sense xxx

hi hun. it really really depends on the size of the pots or ice cube trays!!! i am now using the tesco ones as they are FAB after people on here recommended them - so easy to pop out. but they are smaller cubes than other ice cube trays, i find, so i need more...

i also bought the Boots ones, which are bigger (and they have covers). i will use them when i make up proper meals for him, but at the moment with fruit/veg i'm sticking to the ice cube trays.

i put thin freezer bags over my ice cube trays to put in the fridge, then put them in the freezer. after a few hours when they're done i take them out and pop them all quickly into another food container, which i label up with what it is and the date, then i can reuse my trays to make something else. it means i've got lots of trays of different things, so for example today i grabbed some cubes of carrot, then some of parsnip, then some sweet potato. it's really good that way as i can mix and match!

ah i see so once theyr frozen u stor them in diff containers rather than keeping in the trays?? is that wot u mean? do they not all stick together in 1 block when u do this? the mix and match sounds a real good plan. Has ur Lo got a good apitite? hown many cubes roughly would he have with 1 meal?? xxx

i basically cook a different veg each day for him (whilst i'm starting out on this weaning journey! plus it's all i've got time for at the minute!), so i cook, puree and fill the trays with that veg, and then they are frozen i put them into a container. so for example i've now got separate containers for carrot, parsnip, sweet potato, pear, apple, butternut squash etc etc.
so yes your interpretation is right :)
(i use the clear food tray container thingies from poundland - 10 for £1!)

i find that they don't really stick together.

his appetite varies, plus it depends on what he's having (whether he likes it or not lol!). yesterday he had a whole TT pot of food that i'd frozen in a pot (i'd got a lot of butternut squash left over one day!) but today he had probably about half a pot made up of different cubes (when they'd defrosted).

some foods i thin out with water as well so it's difficult to say quantities.

for the tesco cubes i say i would defrost about 4 or 5 at the minute (and depending what it is maybe add rice or milk or water or nothing!). i've no idea if this is right though!! would be interesting to see what others do.

he has porridge or banana in a morning and i've no idea how much porridge to give him.

thomas is very fussy at times, but that can usually be if he needs to fill his nappy!

good luck xxx

cool thanks for tips i think i do similar to u, but with pots ot trays, think i'll stick with the pots now, as thats wot iv done so fr (dont want 2 confuse myself lol) laila sometimes has banana for breakfast she loves it, u usualy blend it smooth with hand blender, she loves pear and apple too. Making the meals up does take alot of time, and effort, lol. I usualy do it on a sunday when my OH is free to watch Laila then i make up 3 or 4 diff things, so Lailas got a couple weeks worth frozen at the min, I do wonder though if im out for the day I.E in town or something guess id have 2 buy her a pot of food? because it would be a bit wierd asking a cafe to heat her frozen baby food for me? and i wouldnt really be able 2 keep it cool if i had it out with me? have u thought of this? any tips?xx

Ooh mrs e that sounds like a great idea. Think I might do that! I will prob get some clear freezer/food bags as we're going to use the little freezer in our fridge for lo's stuff.

Love that idea so much!!!!

i'm stuck as to what to do when out. i've only fed him once out, and i knew where i was going and i asked them to pop his pot in the microwave for me (and they did). that particular day i just took the food out the freezer before i left the house and he had it about an hour or so later so i didn't have to really keep it cool as it started to defrost in time.

i know places who won't do this though. so i reckon i'll use jars when out, although he tried a jar the other day and hated it!!

my HV suggested when out and about to give our little ones banana as you can prepare that when out - and when they can eat yoghurt, to give them banana mashed with yoghurt - no cooking needed!

Yes I'd also heard that banana was a good 'out and about food'.

I assume you heat/warm lo's food before they have it? ( i am clueless with all of this!!!)
I just bought a TT flask with a cup that sits the bottles in, I think it also said that you could fill the cup with boiling water and then sit the pot of food in it to warm?? I bought it from amazon?
