Subject : Now what do I do?
So we are still working on getting Peter to sleep through the night without feeding. Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on that one. We have a new regime whereby I pick him initially to soothe him when he wakes, give him a drink of water, put him down when he is quiet (at which point he usually starts moaning at me again) and then sit with my hand on his chest or head shushing him until he goes to sleep. It is still taking up to an hour, but it is much less stressful than it was and he seems to get less upset.
The problem is that he now has a chest infection. He has had a cough for a day or so but was very unhappy this morning and had a raised temperature so I took him to the doctor. He is now on antibiotics and regular doses of Calpol to keep his temperature down and has spent much of the day napping. However, he has gone almost entirely off solids. I managed to get him to eat half his breakfast and only two bites of lunch. I gave him an extra milk feed and we will see how he manages dinner but I am unsure what to do if he wakes tonight. Should I feed him, given how little he has eaten and how unwell he has been, or do I try to stick with just giving him water? I want to get as much fluid into him as possible, to be honest, but I don't want to undo any good work I may have done this past week.
Any advice much appreciated.
A confusticated THG

personally I think that when they are poorly you just need to muddle through as best you can, then go back to the regime when things are a bit calmer.
It will be hard going when you do go back to being strict though.
hope he feels better soon,

I think it's going to be up to you when he wakes. You could try water and then if he's more unsettled do a bottle. If he's ill then everything changes and it may set you back a bit, but it's better to help him feel well and cope with being ill than worrying too much about it for the moment in my opinion.
Hope that it isn't too bad for you tonight.

Oh what bad timing!only you know how bad he is but I'd say if he's not eating much and is on antibiotics -feed him, even at the risk of undoing all your hard work,I know when I'm poorly I like a little of whatever I fancy and plenty of fluids, get better soon baby!!xx

Thanks, ladies. I think I am going to feed him tonight. He only had a few bites of dinner and half his bedtime bottle so I am guessing he will be hungry as and when he wakes. We'll see. Poor mite is absolutely exhausted (started falling asleep in the bath) and the antibiotics are supposed to make him sleepy as well, so maybe we will be in luck. He's still grumbling to himself, 15 minutes after he was put down, but perhaps once he goes to sleep he might stay that way for once. Not counting on it though!

Hello hunni! I replied to your last post with some harsh (cc) advice!
Ok bun, I stand by this advice, except when they are ill! When they are ill and on antibiotics, you feed them through the night and give them any comfort they need. Then you start any cc etc again when they are better again. No alternatives as far as I am concerned x
When they are ill you do everything to comfort them, no questions asked!
Hope he gets well soon.

Hi hun, how did it go? Oh this all sounds so familiar. Was just about to post in the March forum about nightwakings. I'm still feeding Nina during the night, but I do feel she would be sleeping through by now had it not been for, what seems like, a continuous cycle of chest infections/viruses and bad teething pain. Just when she's back to normal and sleeping well something crops up and I don't feel I can't feed her in the night again. I think it's best when they're poorly, but totally feel you pain! Don't be too disheartened though. Sounds like you've made a good start and hopefully if it's only a couple of days, you won't be completely back to square one.
Anyhoo, let us know how it goes. And please share your secret when Peter is better and sleeping through. x

Morning!
Thanks for all the advice. He was up once at 2:15, fed for 15 minutes and then went back to sleep right through until 7:30 - the best night we have had for ages! He's still not very well (I've decided to give mum and baby group a miss this morning) but at least he is eating again and his temperature is down.
Mims, I think I'm going to keep feeding him as long as he is on antibiotics and then try again. Thanks for confirming my instinct!
Missy, sorry to hear Nina has been unwell. It is horrible - far worse than getting up in the night. :/( Dunno as I'll have any secrets to share! I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I can get him sleeping through by Christmas! (Was aiming at my birthday but that has now gone out the window.) Hugs to you both and hope you get some proper sleep soon. x

Good Morning! Pleased to hear you had an ok night and that Peter seems better today. I'm also constantly widening the goal posts for Nina. First, she will be sleeping through by 3 months, then 6, now 9! Lol, shall we have a competition. The winner sleeps through by Christmas! x
