Subject : Swine Flu - AGAIN!
Did you ladies see this in pregnancy??
http://www.mumsnet.com/onlinechats/david-salisbury
It's pretty useful. Although I am now more confused than ever! I was adamant I wasn't having it but now I'm not sure...
I live in London and use public transport for work - do you think this should affect my decision??
I'm really not convinced about it because of the possible unknown affects on the baby and the feeling of being a guinea pig - but then I can't help thinking what if I catch it and die?? or what if she catches it when she's really tiny?? OMG am I acting like a maniac?!
I just want someone unbiased to tell me what to do! x x x

I wrote a really long replya nd it was eaten...Grr!!
I am too in London so have the same concerns. I havent made my decision yet as I want to spend some more dedicated time researching it so I can make an informed decision.
I spoke to my GP last week and she said she didnt envy being in my position and that if it ws her daughter then she would hate to have to help her make the decision. As my GP she advised in her professional capacity I have the vaccine (as per the national guidelines) but off the record said if it was her or a family member she would tell them to hold fire and wait to see how it develops and if/when it is classed as a Pandemic then to go ahead with the vaccine. I think I may take her advice and do this unless I read anything on the contary.
It is all so confusing. Good Luck with whatever decision you come too
Sharmy xx

It is so confusing.
When we were away we had the american news channels and literally every day they did a special report on swine flu and pregnancy, they were really pushing mothers2b to get the jab, there were some quite scary stats in there about mums2b so far who have been put in intensive care or died. My hubby really wants me to have it but I am not sure. I have a friend whose partner is expecting, he is a pharmacist and he wants her to have it, this has been a sort of help to me as I know he is a really good pharmacist and would have done his own research as he is about to be a Dad. I still don't know though. My problem is that I have a weak immune system and I catch everything, even now I have only been back 2 days and have gotten a crappy cold so I will probably get it if exposed to it.
I am just going around in circles with this decision.

Ha ha, just as I wrote that reply the post came and I had a letter from my Drs about me getting it :)
I have a leaflet with it so might might make myself a cuppa and have a read now, although its probably completely uninformative!

Ive not had the letter from my doctors yet!
I am still pretty decided that im not having the vaccine and hoping that me and Liam can get by without catching it.
I think what Sharmy has said is brilliant and probably one of the best things to do. So have decided now that I will wait and see what happens.
Ive just had a really bad cold and chest infection, so am still getting over it. I did at one point think perhaps it was swine flu but when I read the symptoms on NHS direct apparently you suffer loss of appetite and ive not suffered this so therefore apparently I hadnt got it. I cant help but think how much more worse it would be if it was swine flu, Liam hardly moved all weekend because of how poorly I was. Just dont want to think about what it would be like if it was worse.
Let us know what you all decide girls :)

Hi Girls,
Well I have to say I am getting it I had read mountains of stuff and done a lot of investigating and in my own opinion ( I am not medically trained at all) I think it is the option for me. There was a query on mecury content in pregnancy but the figure used was small in itself but the actual vaccine we get is 10 times smaller as the bit they make up is for 10 people. The actual 'base' for the SW vaccine is the same as the normal flu vaccine which is given to pregnant women. The doctor yester sort of described it as when you buy a tin of paint that youneed the colour mixed you just by the base paint so normal flu is one shade of colour and swine flue is just another shade???
I know a girl (through a girl in work) who is in hospital as we speak due same time as me with complications and no previous or underlying conditions which scared me.
I think the press has a lot to answer for, also there was a big debate about thyamine (or the correct spelling!) and even when they took it out of US vaccines the autistic rate was not affected at all it kept rising indicating it did not cause it?
I told my Dr I was getting it and she said she believes I have made the right choice, I also spoke to a midwife over the phone and she too agrees with my choice.
every one is different but when I think of this I think of the MMR and how it was wrongly accused and now kids are catching measles etc as parents were too scared to get the vaccine and this was poor information too.
Each to their own but i'll be getting jabbed on saturday xx

I too am really confused by this. My doctors surgery phoned me this morning and asked me to go in today for the swine flu jab.
I declined although I have made an appointment to have it done near the end of this month but still not sure if I will keep this appointmnet.
I have been trying to do some research on the internet but it is all so contradictory and you just dont know what to believe. So at the moment I am still undecided but I think my hubby really wants me to have it. But I will def get him to read some of the stuff I have been reading online and then see what he thinks. Although I do worry about all the scaremongering on both sides of this issue, I think that if I wasn't pregnant and I was offered the jab I would have it but being pregnant makes such a difference when decision making.
I agree with moonbeam in the fact that a similar thing happened with the MMR jab and it all turned out to be ok and now loads of little ones are getting measles ect.
Decisions decisions, it's a difficult one girls.

God, thats made me think again now about not having the jab. Have sent the link to my parents, and will get DH to read it all tonight, and see what they think too.
We've just had our first student swine flu case here (work at a Uni), so is obviously now starting up, and I deal with the snotty so-and-so's all day, so am quite likely to catch it from them.
If only we had a crystal ball to see in to the future eh? :(

La La I agree to if I wasn;t pregnant i would get it in a heart beat but when your carrying your baby its a harder choice, my OH has wanted me to get it all along. I teach in a college so am exposed to about 100 kids a week in class never mind all the dirty wee pigs who dont wash their hands and touch all the door etc so my job would be wuite high risk contact wise, there hasn;t been much talk of an outbreak with students yet but hopefully if there is I will be protected, I have to say like others have said if I was in a low risk situation ie: didn;t work with public or was at home with my son would may be not be so keen but think I am doing the right thing for me xxx

I'm pretty unsure about having the jab, but after having swine flu last week and feeling as bad as i did, i think its a posibility. I am going to have a chat with my gp and see what her advice is x

It's all so confusing!
In my heart I don't want to have it, I just don't feel comfortable with it. I spoke to dh about it last night and he's not comfortable with it either. We have decided to just focus on trying to stay healthy (I have a weak immune system though!), making sure I keep warm and **try** to avoid ill people etc. And if it does go to pandemic status we'll reconsider then. I haven't even had a letter from my doctors yet any way.
I guess it's one of those things where you never know if you'll regret your decision until it's too late. (I am not in a morbid mood today by the way despite how that sounds ha ha ha!) x x x

Well, having been SO adamant initially that I wasnt going to have it, I've now changed my mind and decided (with the help of my parents and DH) to have it after all. Working with so many snotty students makes me even more high risk, so even though I dont *really* want to have it, I think its the safest choice right now. Dont want to be panicking for the next 20 weeks about catching it and ending up very, very ill. Have to say, that Q&A posted above really did make a difference in my decision - explained away a lot of my fears. x
