Subject : What could be wrong

Going to see HV today but no doubt i will be fobbed off with its normal!

Little man who is 7 1/2 weeks just isnt settled - day and night. Hes screaming very high pitched but not after every feed. He keeps going very red in face like he is straining. Passing lots of loud and smelly wind!!Wont settle unless being cuddled or rocked. Isnt drinking all his milk (although moved him onto Aptamil Comfort Monday afternoon which is thicker) Sounds congested at night time

Anyone experience this??

Hi hun
Lily went through a few weeks of screaming and straining for about 2 hours and then later on she would have a poo. Does he fill his nappy after doing this and then settle a bit better?
I asked the HV too as it was upsetting me i was in tears watching her upset, apparently their little brains cant register that when they have a tummy pain they need to poo, so they scream as they dont know what to do. Lily is 9 weeks tomorrow and has been fine the last 2 weeks. I even changed her onto comfort to see if it worked but changed her back as she seemed to sort herself out xxxx

Hi hun. Nope no nappy filled since Monday, he just sounds in pain so much its horrible. He was screaming from 6pm until 10.30 on and off last night until he tired himself out. Weird thing was he was going mad during and after feeds during the day yesterday but no winging during night feeds so dont think it could be a milk intolorence?

Sounds like he's constipated hun...

Try him with some cool boiled water, or even better, some pure orange juice diluted with water. Also, lie him on the floor facing you and 'cycle' his legs and/or massage his tummy in small circles - that encourages them to poo...

If he's still screaming after having had a poo, perhaps you could talk to the HV about reflux? Silent reflux is the one where they scream and scream after feeds - it's a bit like acid indigestion for us... Not serious and easily fixed with Gaviscon for babies, along with other things which we can tell you about if you need it! :-)

Good luck!

We saw Dr last week and he gave him gaviscon which didnt do anything just made him do a huge hard poo :( I then gave him cooled water and it cleared him out. Do you think it could be the change in milk? But saying that he wasnt drinking as much over the weekend on his normal milk?

Bertie was very unhappy for a while, they didnt think it was colic as it was throughout the day so diagnosed reflux, gaviscon alone didnt d anything but the HV suggested Colief colic drops which you can get from chemist and if they work get on prescription as they are about £10.00, Bertie moved to aptamil comfort too so in every bottle he had colief drops and gaviscon as they both do different things. The colief works by removing the lactose from the milk if baby is lactose intolorent and the gaviscon helps it so stay down comfortably. Bertie settled really well and went from screaming all the time to hardly crying at all. He is now so settled we have moved him onto Aptamil hungry food but when I try to stop using the colief drops he starts with the crying again so it must be doing something.

Hi Joey, Toby has silent reflux and his symptoms were...
Screaming at feeds - I'd only manage to get 3/4ozs down him before he started and then he refused anymore milk. As such we were feeding him every 2.5-3hrs as he was hungry but could only manage a little bit of milk! Along with the screaming was the back arching - he'd throw himself backwards and squeal his head off.
He had a persistent cough, hiccups all the time, dribbles loads and sleeps very badly.
We were prescribed Gaviscon but it didn't help... so he's now on SMA Staydown milk which is thicker in his tummy. The reflux is still there, he still does it every now and again (screaming and back arching) but only 2-3 times in the last month or so. But he's more settled, sleeps better (most of the time!!!!!!!!!!!) and goes 4hrs between feeds.
Toby is bottle fed and 6 months old tomorrow!

Gaviscon does make them constipated as well - I guess because it's thicker..

Daisy had terrible trouble when we first started with the Gaviscon - and she previously had the wettest poos you've ever seen!

To contradict Georgie (sorry love!!!) my HV told me not to use anything else in her milk when she was having Gaviscon so worth a chat with your HV - don't know why really other than it's too much for a little body to cope with.. Can't see why though because it's not like the Colief (or Infacol in my case) has any drugs in it... Just thought I'd share it with you. And like you say Georgie, it's working, so why would you change it?!!

Joey - I'm sure it'll be the change in both milk and Gaviscon that will have done it. Do you still have any of your normal milk - perhaps try that with the Gaviscon for a couple of days to see if it makes any difference. Remember that the other milks are thicker, and the Gaviscon makes it thicker so he might just be uncomfortable because he can't poo...

HI, My little girl suffered from terrible constipation from birth (she is two next month). It was heartbreaking to watch her strain and shake and then she would scream as she passed rock hard poos and would bleed from her bum. I took her to health visitors who all gave advise on the "remedies" described above. I tried them all to no avail. One day when I couldnt bath her because her bottom was so sore, I decided enough is enough and made a fuss at my doctors and finally got a referral to a dietician. She suggested I try a dairy free diet for my daughter and the relief was immediate, and she hasnt had constipation since. Cow and Gate do infasoy but if your child doesnt drink that, you can ask your dietician for a prescription for another formula which is more palletable. I wish my HV had suggested lactose intolerance earlier, would have saved us both lots of heartache! Never mind though, shes a lovely happy girl now without any bowel problems!!
