Subject : ICSI is our only hope

Hi Ladies

I don't know if any of you will remember me, I don't post very often and haven't been on here for a while but thought I would update you, hope you don't mind

Basically hubby and I have been ttc for 17 months, all seems ok with me hsg and scans all good still a bit of a ? as to whether I am oving but the specialist at the hosp thinks I am and isn't overly concerned

However hubby has had two really bad SA's the main factor being the motility. He has been diagnosed with a variocele (sp) which could be contributing to the issue but we went for our follow up appt today and basically she has said we will need help, the chances of conceiving naturally are zilch, and so she is refering us for ICSI.

We are waiting for some blood test results and then she will send the referal. We get one free go and we have chosen The Chiltern (we live in bucks), she said once she has sent the referal it could be as soon as Feb/March for starting treatment which I am really pleased about!!

I am really sad that we need to go down this route...but also feel positive that we are moving forward and considering we haven't been ttc that long I feel quite lucky. I am just praying that it works I so want to be a mummy :-) xxxx

Hi MrsBno1, sorry to hear your news honey. I have had similar news myself over the past few months and am just starting ICSI this week (privatley as not eligible on NHS due to being too young at 27!!). It is not the route anyone wants to go down sweetie buf if it gives us our long-awaited babies, then it will all be worth it and won't matter how they got here.... Good luck hon. Any questions feel free to ask.

Tatty - congratulations on your BFP!!!!

Hi Mrs Baby No 1 - nice to 'see' you again. It's great news that you are being referred already. I've been told that we can't be referred until 1st Dec when the rules change. That means it will have been 12 months since we initially went to the GPs. I think we will go for the Oxford Fertility Unit because that is closer to us than the Chiltern. Please keep in touch. It's good to hear from others in the same situation in the same area.

Hi Mrs Baby No 1, sorry to hear your news. Having received it in July myself, I know how devastating it is.

We're having our treatment at the Chiltern, and they're really lovely there - it's small and friendly, and because it's small everyone gets to know you. The consultant is very shy and can seem a bit abrupt - he doesn't sugar-coat any of his messages. The nurses are absolutely amazing, and they're the ones you have the most dealings with.

There's a group of us having treatment at the Chiltern who chat on Fertility Friends in the Buckinghamshire section, and some of us have met up a couple of times - we're going to try to make it a monthly thing, I think, and anyone who's around and wants to join us is welcome.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any specific questions about the Chiltern, and good luck xxx

Hi there,

Earlier on in the year I wrote a post with more or less the same title as yours.

I don't know about you but it sort of feels like someone has whacked you when you get the news.

On the other hand though when the news had sunk in I felt strangely more relaxed about things and was noticeably less of an emotional mess.
I felt like after a year or so of waiting and not knowing what was going on we finally had a reason for not conceiving with a glimmer of hope of actually conceiving via the miracle of science.

A friend of mine who had ICSI said to me that one of the hardest things is getting your head around the fact that this is actually happening and I think she's def right. It took me a while to accept it but with our treatment starting next month (hopefully) I'm now fully on board and just raring to go. I'm excited, apprehensive, optimistic, cautious and a whole other range of emotions.

It's great that you're feeling positive about moving forward and Feb/March will be here before you know it - sounds cliché but the months since our first appointment and everything starting to happen have flown by.

Good luck with everything.

xx

Hi Ladies

Thanks so much for all of your replies:

Tatty 82 - huge congratulations on your BFP you must be so happy x

Tinybabydancer - thanks for your advice good luck with everything, I really hope you get your BFP x

Mrs Hopeful - I really hope they get your referal sorted soon I have also heard good things about Oxford but the chiltern is closer for us. I will keep you posted on how we get on and please do keep me posted on your progress etc x

LDOM - thanks so much for your advice I have ventured over to Fertility Friends and will probably post at some point on the chiltern thread as there are lots of lovely ladies on there offering support etc and it's really reassuring to hear so many good things about the chiltern. Good luck with everything and I am sure we will speak soon x

Claire - Ski - I remember reading your post and thinking how devastated I would be if that was me...how ironic, it's so true when people say i never thought that would happen to me. I think I kind of accepted we might need help after hubby's first SA back in June due to the poor motility so have had a few months to get my head around it all but it is a bit of a shock still. However saying that you are right when you say it's good to know things are moving and in a way I feel like a bit of a weight has been lifted now and I am actually feeling really positive about it all so that's a good thing! I really hope your first cycle goes well and I am keeping everything crossed for your BFP x

Hi Mrs Baby No 1,

Wanted to say sorry you have to go down this line but if you're fit and healthy with regular cycles (not too skinny!!) your success rate improves noticeably :)

Not sure if you're aware but you and your OH need proof of immunity to HIV,Hep B and Hep C. Also you will need to be tested for rubella and chlamydia. We managed to get these tests done before our initial consultation under the NHS (and found out I wasn't immune to rubella. Very annoying!)

Good luck,

xxxx

Hi Mrs Pootle

Thanks for the info, yes my cycles are regular and when I was weighed at the hospital they said my BMI was perfect, me and hubby have also been eating really healthy and have started running 3 times a week to get fit! Hopefully this will all help :-)

We had bloods done on Tuesday for Hepatitis and HIV and I had the chlamydia test done on our first appt, which was fine. Also I got tested for rubella when I saw my gp a few months ago and again that was all ok
Hopefully we are pretty sorted

How are things with you? xx
