Subject : About to start and confused by the schedule

Hi,
My husband and I have been TTC for over 3 years. We have been labeled with unexplained infertility .
We've been extremely lucky that within 6 months of being added to the IVF waiting list, we're at the top and about to begin treatment but I'm a bit confused about a couple of things.
On the first day of my current cycle I went in for a scan and blood tests. I was told I have 19 follicles but no idea if this is good or not?
Also, the literature I was given said that I would begin buserelin injections 1 week before my next cycle begins. I've been given an appointment just 2 days before my next cycle. Does this sound right?
Thanks x

Hiya Donna, sorry to hear of your troubles TTC but great you can get tx on the NHS....I have just started IVF but had to go privately.
19 follicles is really good. I had my scan today and I have 12 which they were really pleased with! It basically means that you have a good chance of getting at least 19 eggs, as each follicle should end up with an egg in it, but you may also get more than this as more follicles may develop as well. It's a great start bsically!

I really can't help with the injections question as I am on the short protocol and it sounds like you're on the long one. I would contact your IVF consultant and/or nurses to check this out and ask for a clear schedule of what you need to do.

Good luck and sorry couldn't be more helpful x

Hi Donna,

We are due to start IVF/ICSI next month (hopefully) and as far as I am aware we are on the long protocol.

Schedule wise, I need to ring on the first day of my next period and sort an appointment for day 21 of my cycle. On day 21 I need to go into the hospital with my bag of drugs and needles where the nurse will inject me/show me how to inject (the latter I think actually) with the down regulation drug (I don't know the name of it though sorry)
I will have to inject this for 2-3 weeks until my womb lining is x mm thick/thin. During this time I should have a period.
Once my womb lining is think enough then I'll start on the stimulation drugs and I think I'll be on those for 10-14 days. During this time I'll be scanned for follicles and their size etc.
If all is well then egg collection will happen and then x number of days after any fertilised embryos put back in - actually it will be 1 embryo as they are very strict about this at our clinic.

I hope that helps you a bit.

I'm a bit confused as to why you had a scan at the same time as your blood test when presumably you are yet to start any of the IVF drugs.
Maybe this differs from clinic to clinic though.

Good luck with everything

x

Thanks Claire.

Maybe I'm going in to get the drugs and then will have to go back in on day 21 of my next cycle to actually start taking them.

Hi Donna

I'm on the buserelin sniffer which is less traumatic than the sniffer... You should have been offered the choice.
I'm now on 1 sniff 3 times a day. Still having mega hot flushes though.
Maybe you had your EU bloods taken the same time as you scan... All sounds good. 19 follicles are great news...

If you are at all confused about anything call one of the nurses in the Hospital department you are attending...

Good luck.

Em x
