Subject : Why won't she say 'mummy'? Sad

Well Evie is 1 and a half and she is pretty good with her talking. She's always been really alert and taking things in from being little. And now she can say quite a lot of words, recognize animals and do noises etc. She even suprized me yesterday by saying saying 'library' when she wanted to read a library book!

But she will only say mummy very very rarely and I don't know why. It's all about Dada at the moment! Sometimes I think she's doing it as a game, cos when OH says 'where's Mummy?' she points at me. But if I say 'say Mummy' she replies with 'Dada'!

Does anyone have any advice? Do you think if I stop asking her to say it then she might start? I know she can say it but she just doesn't want to!

Sorry, it's a bit of a wierd one but any ides appreciated.

Lea, My lo has only this week started to say mama and he is 21 months! He says lots of other words and even makes a pretty good attempt at 'blueberries' so you can imagine how upset I was that he didn't want to say mama or anything resembling mummy. And then all of a sudden he started saying mama and now he says it all the time.

I bet it will come out of nowhere x

LOL! we have the opposite problem - everything, inc Daddy, is mamam!
The speech therapist Ollie saw told us not to worry about it too much, as when we were talking about him not saying it Ollie looked at us and whispered dada before giggling to himself! The lil tinker - so we know he can say it, he just refuses to say it and i dont blame him as it is funny watching dad get wound up when Ollie shouts Mamam! at him all the time he he Wink

As hard as it is I would try not to worry, they know who you are and they will say it in time.

Barney does exactly the same. I know he can say mummy (well, mumma) because he occasionally does, but if he wants me he shouts Daddy WhateeeEver! I think it's a game, he knows full well that's not my name but it seems to amuse him.
Chin up, give it another month and they'll probably be calling every one mummy!

He said lots of peoples names before mine lol! Don't worry about it. I think he just thought i knew what he wanted when so why call me by my name???

Zacky is 16 mths and always used to say mom mom, but this has stopped in the last couple of months and he will either say daddy or pop. We went through a phase where everything was pop even though we knew he wanted something else. Zacky has phases on different words now, so dont worry, Evie will play around with words for a while yet and mamma will be in there somewhere.

Lily has been able to say mama for ages but never said it to me. Like others if you ask where mummy is she points to me or a photo of me. Until last week...we were walking round Tesco when out of the blue she started shouting mama, mama, mama! I had left her and her Daddy with the trolley while I went to get something and she obviously wanted my attention! Since then she has said it lots to me. I'm sure Evie will do it soon. Oh, Lily is 16 months. xx

Hi hun
I wouldnt worry too much, Lea went through a stage of never saying mummy even though she could say it! All she would say is dadddy or dada and i used to get really annoyed lol, but she says it all the time now, i think they are takling in so many new words that sometimes they dont tend to say the ones they know best! Daddy was Lea's first word and think that's why she continued to say it xx

Like the other ladies say I wouldnt worry.
Sian is 13 months & you when she turned 1 just randomly turned round and said 'mummy'. she can also say daddy but sometimes calls him mummy too.
I think its a game to them lol

Aw thanks so much for all your replies. I thought it was strange but seems it's more common than I thought.

I'm sure she does think it's a game the little monkey. Still, Lily says 'mummeee' enough times a day to make up for Evie not saying it LOL! It's just a bit sad when lo's will say everyone else's name but not yours.
