Subject : A more helpful webchat about swine flu

Hi Ladies

I know many people were a bit disappointed with the lack of information on swine flu during the recent webchat on here, and during some research I discovered Mumsnet have had a very good webchat with a Professor.

Its here if you want a read.Hope its more useful.

Thanks so much for that chick!
I keep swaying on way then the other and was going to sit down tonight, do some more research and make my mind up. I've been worrying all day since I heard of that 31 year old who died of pneumonia 18 days after giving birth and being on a packed tube every day I know I have a good chance of catching swine flu.
This webchat answers loads of the questions I had. Good work!!

Hey hon
Thanks for that, I was disappointed too!

I spoke to my MIL on Sunday as she is a GP's nurse and will be dishing it out so wanted her opinion.
She basically said that there is so much hype surrounding it which doesn't surround other jabs. The flu jab changes EVERY year to cope with the different strains but nobody challenges it, everybody lets their babies have the first 3 jabs but then question the MMR etc etc so she thinks it's just media hype.
She did say that if you want it to grab it with both hands as once we are not pregnant then it will be years before we are offered unless we are high risk in other areas. It does offer the baby immunity for around 6 months to a year.
She didn't say GO FOR IT, or DON;T YOU DARE which I was kinda hoping for but personally, I have now decided if I am offered it then I will be taking it, not for my benefit but for my babies. She did say as I am further along (33+2), bubs is well developed. She is aware I was concerned of the thamaldohide (sp) drug that was given and caused deformities but she said that it was because babies weren't formed.
She also said that they are definately going to be offering to first trimester as well as second and third.
My MIL is very anti prescriptions, she dismisses most illnesses so if she says "go to the doctors" you normally know you need to worry lol! So for me, It was a real eye opener with her actually saying I should have it if I want it.
Also, I had heard 2 surgeries in my area were refusing to give it. Obviously it got alarm bells ringing and I thoguht it was because they didn't agree with it. turns out they do believe in it, they just don't have the resource to offer it which is dispicable! It certainly changed my mind as I was working on teh basis some dr's were really against it but they are not.
I'm not sure if it helps anyones decisions but I did say I woudl post once I have spoken to her.

Hi there - i had my jab last night and feel fine so far, it didn't hurt at all getting it (not as sore as giving blood by far!) although my arm does feel a bit like a was doing one-armed press ups all day yesterday now lol

I swayed for weeks over whether to get it or not but eventually decided to take the plunge after researching and talking to people who've had it. Whether you go for it or not, make sure you decide on what YOU want, as i'm sure you'll have a lot of people telling you what they think you should do like i had.

Good luck! :)

great link I have also decided to get the injection and am booked in for Saturday, this link has confirmed my decision. I was at my GP's yesterday as my DS is sick (possibly has had the swine but they wont test unless he is being admitted ffs) and told her I was going to get it and she said in her opinion I have made the right choice which settled me too x

There's a link on the interview to this letter to clinicians from Prof Salisbury with Q&A which is also useful to read. Here's the link in case people miss it on the interview:

Hi Jojo_b
I don't live in London anymore but if I did, using busy public transport would definitely be something I would consider when making my mind up. I have pretty much decided NOT to get the vaccine based on my low chance of exposure, one of the key factors being that I don't use public transport and I am not exposed to many people on a daily basis. If I still lived in London, in my old job and old commute I would be thinking longer and harder about whether to get the vaccine. For me, the chance of catching swine flu now is low so I am not willing to take the risk of the vaccine. However, if I evaluated my risk of exposure as being high I would be more inclined to get the vaccine (after much further extensive research I hasten to add!).
