Subject : food
Hi girls.
I know i have posted about this before but charlie (nearly 7 months now) still will not eat food with any kind of lumps in! I sat very patently on saturday afternoon and tried to get him to eat a bit of a jar with lumps. They were not big lumps just what i'd call normal size, he gagged the whole way through, coughed went red it was a total nightmere! I still haven't tried him with any finger foods other than a rusk which he's fine with. I did buy a munchkin but he doesn't seem to like it, i think the net puts him off. He doesn't seem to manage lumps or anything like that very well at all. I read on here all your babies are having exciting foods and feeding on the own almost and i get a bit upset (silly i know!) and i know all babies are different but i can't help but worry! Any advice would be great!

What about baby led weaning? then there is no pressure on him, he helps himself and is less likely to gag as he's in control. Basically you give him whatever you're eating or make things like cheese on toast, sandwiches for lunch with veggie and fruit fingers.

I really wouldn't worry too much, he'll do it all in his own time hun. All I can suggest is that you keep perservering and trying him with lumpy food. If he likes rusks then you know he can do it. We have the problem that Nate hasrefused to eat anything runny since having mashed food so even his custard has to be really thick :)

Are you jar feeding him a lot or only occasionally? The reason I ask is that I have read that babies who have jars of food regularly have difficulty is transitioning to the next stage as the textures are completely different. Have you tried doing you own food for him making it thicker and lumpier? I have a food processor thing that I put homemade food into if I can't mash it down, things like stew. However, I manage to mash most things, such as tonight, Ethan had chicken with rice and mushrooms.
I am sure he will get there in his own time. Kat's idea about BLW is good though, we have done a mix of purees and finger food with Ethan and been pretty successful so far.
All the best with it.

Im a total baby with lumps as a couple girls here will tell you, but after today (and watching Izzy devour chicken - Kats baby) i tried Evan with some pizza and garlic bread that daddy was eating and Evan was screaming at! Not the most healthy food but i wanted something that was soft but hard, and the monkey devoured it...stuck his nose up to the food id mashed for him and ate loads of that instead and enjoyed it so much and handled it alot better than being spoon fed lumps (a gagger here too!)...not quite ready for chicken balls Kat but im getting there hehe...i find the stronger the flavour the less he gags...maybe the taste distracts him, take it slow and hel get used to it, im going to make a daily effort to sit with him and pratice with 'normal' food, theres no rush he will do it eventually! x

I do jar feed him at the moment but only because he won't eat anything else! I have tried mashing our food up for him but he gets in a right state. I will keep going at it i'm sure he will get there in the end. What finger foods shall i try him with? I did try him with a slice of toast with butter on a while ago and he did manage quite well. I would love him to have our food but he just gags and coughs. I might call my hv and see what they advise me to do!
Thanks for all your advice girls.

I wouldn't worry about lumpy food just yet. He will do it when he wants too. Erin is 29 weeks and doesn't do lumpy food. All babies are different. You may find he goes straight from pureed to finger food.
