Subject : How long between feeds?

Hi, not been on here for ages as it has been crazy having 2 babies plus our computer had a virus!

I haven'y caught up with many posts but it seems that most people are still around that I remember from the now departed due in sept forum.

Anyhoo, I was just wondering for those who are breastfeeding, how long your baby goes between feeds? Emerson is 6 weeks now and he'll go a maximum of 3 hours - day and night. At night-time he seems worse and sometimes is awake every hour - probably not wanting to feed, just wanting the boob! I just feel that he should be able to go for longer now without feeding. Or, do you think maybe I am not producing enough milk? I am finding it so hard second time round!

In the day its anything between 2-4 hours depending on her mood it seems, at night we get between 4-7 hours again depending on her mood and how her day has been. She has sleepy days and awake days and the nights are better when shes had more sleep in the day as she isnt over tired.

She does use the booby for comfort too though which i'm not too bothered about unless it hurts then I'll stick a dummy in.

Is Emerson doing plenty of wee's (more then 4 wet nappies) and at least 2 poo's a day? if he is then he's getting enough milk.

Maybe he's confused between day and night!?!

On a good day Beth feeds roughly:

7am
10am
Somewhere between 1-2 pm depending on when she wakes from nap.
5pm
6.15 (after bath although v rarely takes anything really)
10.30pm
3-4ish

Sometimes she will wake at about 1 and 5 which is a pain.

Does he fall asleep on the boob? Are you getting full feeds in or is he snacking? Does he use the boob to fall back to sleep at night? Maybe he doesn't know how to get himself back to sleep without it?

Hey hun hope you are well.
Tilly cluster feeds, I just cannot seem to fill the little madam! Mostly it's about every 2 hours although at night I give her a bottle of formula, she then wants breastmilk (think it's a comfort thing) then throws herself off my boob very dramatically and sleeps between 3 and 5 hours! That is, when she finally decides to sleep which is usually when everyone else is waking up!

I agree that it is very hard 2nd time round, I've been struggling through a blur of 2 different size nappies, poo, sick and feeds.

Oscar goes 2-3 hours between feeds, sound similar to Emerson in that sometimes it's every hour. Especially from 4am! Tough when up with Isaac at 7.30am every morning! He is only 4 weeks though. I remember Isaac being 8-10 weeks when he started going longer.

Good to hear from you. Hope it gets easier.

Thanks for all the replies ladies. He has plenty of wet and dirty nappies and is gaingin weight so I guess he is getting enough. I think maybe he is using the boob for comfort at night but its so hard to know. I don't really want to leave him crying in the middle of the night as he'll wake up my hubby and son - plus - what if he is hungry? I try not to let him fall asleep when he is feeding but it is hard, especially in the night as I sometimes doze off whilst feeding him. And, I keep it dark so can't see what his eyes are doing!! I guess I'll keep going for a bit and see if he improves. Grrrr, why is this so hard!
