REFLUX.
This is what my son got diagnosed with on Friday by the Consultants at the local hospital. I thought I was dealing with a GRUMPY baby. He had a pathalogical hate of a nappy being changed and bath. Everytime we tried to put him down he cried, and he had very little sleep, Only time he seemed to settle was in my arms when I was standing upright with him on my shoulder. ALL the health professionals I spoke with said COLIC, I tried everything known to mankind to settle the COLIC - needless to say it did not work,. I bought countless books and even tried controlled cying (for about 12hrs) - and NOTHING settled my son. I was in dispair. Was it me? Was there something I was doing that was causing him distress??!!!
I finally brokedown on Thusrday, I got an emergency appointment with my GP on Friday. LUCKILY, (or unluckily) my son had just eaten before we got to the doctors and put on a full performance whilst he was there. He was not sick but screaming crying and nothing I did settled him. The doctor witnessed everything and we where refered immediatley to the hospital.
The staff at the hospital where AWESOME. They observed what I was doing in a very friendly non-confrontational environmet and took notes. I mentioned that my son had not been fed and I needed to feed him again. 30minutes after his feed my son performed again - full on screaming!! It was awful. I told them this would happen every day and could last hours, I thought I had a naughty & grumpy baby on my hands and thought that "this was just how babies are" - I just got a grumpy one and would have to live with it. The Doctors where wonderful and quicky diagnosed reflux even though I told them that he is not always sick.
I was given medication which I was told could take two weeks to take effect. Three days later and it's like somebody has given me a diffrent child; I'm not saying that he does not cry - of course he does he is a baby and this is the way he communicates - but he does not scream out in pain.
TRUST your instincts - if you think its not right you figth the professional, you get 2nd opinion. I would not be where I am no if I listened to the first diagnosis. I'm VERY happy I did.
With REFLUX your baby will not like being on his back - thus, not like having a nappy changed or bath or ANYTHING that involves them being on their back. My beautiful, happy little son now loves his bath and only cries when I take him out of it - LOL and he had not cried at any of his nappy changes since Friday!!!!
