How much do your lo's drink? Holly has one of the tommee tippee cups with the straws that holds a lot of juice and she maybe has it filled 10 to 12 times a day with juice, its all sugar free and lightly diluted. I was reading somewhere about a herbal remedy you can get from the health food shop to help calm toddlers down (Holly can get quite hyper) so went in to get some but they didnt have any. Anyway I was talking to the woman who works in the shop and when I said Holly was quite hyper and I was looking for something to calm her down she asked how much Holly drinks and if I had ever had her tested to see if she is diabetic. Do you think 10 to 12 cups a day is a lot for a 20 month old to be drinking? Oh and my dad is diabetic so Im going to call the doc on Monday but wanted to see how much other kids her age are drinking first.

Well Hollys urine samlpe has come back clear so thats fantastic news, she must just love drinking lol Thanks for all your support xx

it does sound like an awful lot but you seem to be doing the right thing and checking for diabeties. a real thirst all the time was what made my cousin go to the docs about her son and he was diagnosed biabetic.

chloe is 19mths and barely drinks a small beaker full but she is a poor drinker!! I would expect a toddler to drink more than chloe but perhaps not as much as Holly drinks. given family history and what you describe i would also get her checked and think you are doing the right thing. let us know how you get on.

Charlotte (21 months) maybe has a full beaker over 1 day, but she's not not a big eater or drinker anyway. 10 to 12 cups does sound a lot though, esp as those cups are tall ones. Wont hurt with a trip to the gp. xx

Amy

My daughter is diabetic and she is 2. She has Type 1 and is insulin dependent and gets 4 injections a day. She was diagnosed at 14 months. One of her first signs was drinking loads a day. However she wouldn't have drank as much as Holly to be honest. Kara took a virus and this is what brought out her diabetes. I would definitely get her checked as soon as possible to make sure and to settle yourself. There is no family history in both my side and my husbands so it was a real shock to us and it didn't even enter my head. Apparently it doesn't have to be hereditary if a child takes Type 1 diabetes as a child.

Feel free to ask me any Q's that you may have. I have a years experience with this and will help you with whatever I can. I hope Holly is fine.

Hiya Louise,

Thanks so much for answering my post, I am planning on calling the docs when they open tomorrow. If I am honest I thought a few months ago Holly couyld be diabetic because of the amount she drinks but my oh's family made me feel stupid for even thinking it. However the more I think about it them more I think there is a chance she is diabetic.
Can I ask does Kara have a rash on the base of her neck? I have read that diabetics often show signs of a velvety rash at the base of their neck and Holly has always had the sort of rash they are discribing but then again I suppose you can read all sorts on the internet but until you get to a GP you will never know.
Ok I have waffled enough lol I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow,
Amy xx

Hi Sorry for not replying sooner as I haven't been on in a few days.

I can't say that I have ever noticed a rash on Kara's neck ever. Kara started to be sick and lost a lot of weight just before she was diagnosed and again started drinking loads.

Another thing you shouldn't do and I am guilty of it as well is reading the internet because you start looking for signs and for things to happen. When Kara was diagnosed I just kept trying to read the positive things and not the negative although it is hard to do.

Glad you took Holly to the Docs. Hope you get the results that you want. Please keep us posted.
