Subject : Teething @ 3 weeks

Hi ladies, just want an opinion on this if that's ok. My wee one is only 3 weeks old and salivates, constantly puts his hands in his mouth and screams and also has what looks like a teething rash. I spoke to my HV and she said to feel his gums and if they feel hard he could possibly be teething as newborns gums should be soft. His gums are rock solid but not sure if this is actually normal for a wee one. I have given him Ashton & Parsons (think this is what it's called) but he still screams and constantly puts his hands in his mouth and bites them. I've tried him with a dummy, which he takes for about 2 mins then spits back out as he doesn't seem to really like it. He is a screamy baby anyway, but never normally this bad and normally settles for an hour after a feed before screaming.

He just won't settle at all tonight. He wasn't due to be fed until 8.15 but he was screaming that much I gave him his bottle at 7.45, he only took 60mil where he would normally take between 80 and 90 and then he started screaming again while taking his bottle. About half an hour later, he brought the full thing back up, which isn't normal as he isn't normally sick after any of his bottles. His teperature is 37.4, which is ok but he's still screaming just now. He settles for about 10 mins then screams again.

Anyone any thoughts? Took him to Docs and he said as long as he's pooing ok then he's fine, which he is.

Hey hun,

I remember when Holly was 3 - 4 weeks old she went through the same and we were told it was teething. We were told just to give her calpol and not to see her in any pain, its horrible watching them when they are in pain so young. Oh and Hollys teeth didnt actually appear for months after!

He's been to the docs and had his mouth checked so can rule our thrush and cold sores. I have just gone and bought colief and will see how he goes with this tonight but again, he has been screaming all day. Something must work!

We have been told not to give him calpol as he's still too young and he needs to be at least 2 months. Wish I could give him it as he just seems to be in so much pain :(

Thanks for your replies xx

Sorry to hear of the pain your LO is in. Could you try using some Dentinox teething gel? It is suitable from birth, can be applied every 20 mins if needed. I use it on my son and it seems to work well.

Really hope he is better soon hun.

hi, on another note, i remember ds having a growth spurt around this time? and babeis do sometimes put their fists in their mouths if they're hungry. also he was very dibbly almost from day 1, but only got his first tooth at 6months. the first 6 weeks are full of growth spurts so wondering if it cld eb this, wld explain why the dummy isn't soothing him as he's after more food. but if ur certain it is teething then cld u try a fridge teether, the ones taht are filled with gel and stick in the fridge so it cools and sootehs his gums, this worked for ds when his first two came thru.

bumpolicous- if i remember rightly infacol can take up to 3 weeks to work, also 6 weeks is another growth spurt, so u may find he settles down again now, then the next one is usually around 12weeks then 16weeks . then again at 6 months

hth
