Subject : unsuccessful VBAC stories

i have been in to see the obs today to discuss my options following my last emergency section, now i desperately want a VBAC, and although the hospital advise me on all the risks for both VBAC and elective section, this still doesn't fully answer my questions, i know lots of studies have been done and they point out the basics and success statistics on VBAC's but i know this sounds a bit dark but i would like to hear from some real people who have had VBAC's go wrong and why they went wrong etc. would love to hear both sides of a VBAC!!!

hi, if your sure im your girl. Havent replied to your other post as didnt want to worry you but since you have asked for the bad side i feel i can tell you.

first labour delivered at 35 weeks after 30+hours rapid onset pre eclampsia during labour made me v poorly and the twins so em sec under GA.

so with next i was determined to have vbac, went into labour at 39+4 slow labour progressed over next two days, was coping well with pain on gas and air, about 11am when i was 39+6 pain was getting bad so had pethadine, was ok till that wore off but pain was then unbearable seriously wanted to die, they gave me a epi but it didnt work and the anethitist didnt belive me at first thought i was making fuss but m/w did and gave me pethadine again and i was ok then blood started to pour out of me so whipped of for em sec.

the pain was so bad due to adhesions from my first section, basically all my organs were stuck together meaning as i contracted my organs contracted too as they were stuck to my uterus. the bleeding was due to the beginings of placental abruption which cld have killed us both.

didnt put me off and i became pg with DS4, had planned section but went into labour at 31+5 and had him em sec at 31+6 due to scar rupturing which is what sent me into labour. i did have v small gap between sections but consultant said that this was prob not a factor but i still feel guilty as i blame myself for DS4 ending up in special care.

personally even having bad labours (ive smoothed it over here lol) i would still have gone for the vbac as i enjoyed it as weird as that sounds and i wld love to have had a 'normal' birth
any questions however personal or radom feel free to ask

x

Hi. This is my experience.
First section was at 38 week due to my daughter being breech and i had pre-eclampsia so i had an elective.
Second pregnancy i was really keen to try for VBAC.
I had said from the beginning that i would try VBAC if i had a spontaneous labour, but would not risk induction....

Well that was untill i got pre eclampsia again and was told i either had to be induced or have another elective.
It took me a while to decide as i was so scared of scar rupture being induced but despiratley wanted VBAC as i knew it might be my last chance (hospital policy not to allow VBA2C).
I decided to give induction a go.

Had an infusion of magnesium sulphate and a prostaglandin gel to soften the cervix. 6 hours later obstratricain came back to see if he could break my waters and before he did he asked if i would allow another pessary and i had already decidied no as i was too worried about the risk of another pessary. He tried extremely hard to break my waters (excruciating as i wasn't ripe enough) anyway he succeded.
Not long after the contractions were coming thick and fast. I didnt get a break from one before the next. I found it hard coping with just gas and air so i asked if it was too early for an epidural and was told no it wasn't so it was arranged. 20 minutes later the anestatist was siting the epidural dont know how he didnt paralyse me as he was trying to do it when i was having a contraction!!

Once it was in it was bliss.. i could relax.
Next thing i know midwife is waking me up cause my bp had plummeted (something they are used to) and not long after obstratrician came back and said baby was having some heart decelerations and as i was only 2cm they thought it best to have a section. I too quickly agreed. Dont think he was in distress, think they were panicking incase of scar rupture which when they operated on me they said the scar was in tact. Anyway i was wheeled off to theatre, not shaved, they just started although it didn't feel like they were rushing.
Last time i had a spinal and this time they just topped epidural up.
Half way through the section i could feel pain on my left side. They were going to give me a general but i said no way, and i would cope with the pain rather than miss the birth. I was given extra pain relief into my hand and it was ok again after a few minutes.

Only laboured for two hours in total from them breaking my waters. The c-setion was more scary this time only because of the pain and the fear of being given a GA. Baby was held over screen I got to hold baby whilst i was being repaired which didnt happen last time.

I am glad i tried VBAC, just wish i had not agreed to section so quickly as things might have turned out ok. At the time i thought it was serious, but after reading up on it, it seems alot of babies have decelerations during contractions. I believe they thought it didn't matter as much as i had already had a section and they are wary of trial of labour/scar.

I would like to try VBA2C and hopefully the hospital will change policy as there is no evedence to suggest its any more risky than a VBA1C. I know my body can do it, i have just never been given a chance under the circumstances.

I dream of being the first to hold my baby, as they are when they come out not wrapped in towels. And just being able to start looking after them staright away instead of being confined to a bed and then hobbling round in pain from major abdominal surgey.

Hope all goes well. sorry post is so long
xx
