ethan has aa squint in one eye sometimes, which has been getting worse, and after being to gp we have been referred to hosp in couple of weeks.

just wondered if anyone else has gone through this with their child, and what they are likely to do to help?

i have been told perhaps a patch would be used but how can a 16mth old be exoected to keep on a patch?

anyway id appreciate any help from anyone whos baby/child has this thanks xx

squint in eye

Hi, Isaac has a squint in his eye, I started to notice it when he was about 20 months old, to start with I wasnt sure as sometimes I could see it and others not at all so I took him to the gp who said it was definitely there, he got seen at the eye clinic who confirmed he had a squint but decided not to patch or put glasses on him then but review him in 6 months, during that time it got noticeably worse so when I saw the paediatrician with him about something else he told me to take him back, they started off with a patch for 3 hours a day which as you can imagine he wasnt too happy about, somedays he would keep it on and others he would just rip it straight off, the patch doesnot correct the squint it preserves the sight in that eye as when the eye squints the brain ignores the eye as it has to work harder so gradually it stops working. He was reviewed again in July and they put his patch down to an hour a day but I have noticed it getting a lot worse again, he is due to be seen on 29 Oct so I will see what they say then. He will ultimately need surgery to correct it but they wont do the surgery until it stops getting worse which can be up to the age of 7. The reason they wait until it stops getting worse is becuase If they operate and it is still changing then they will need to operate again, I got told bye the opthalmologist that it is quite normal for squints to get noticeably worse/better over weeks and months.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else xx

squint in eye

Hi, my son developed a squint in both eyes at around 15 mths. As he was using both eyes equally they didnt try patchs or glasses and went straight for surgery when he was 2. they wont do it before because of risks with the aneathetic (sp?). His left eye is now fine but his right eye still squints a little. We have a check up every 3 months to make sure he is still using both eyes and if not I have been told he will have to start wearing patchs.
